    A popular model – I often came across them in people’s homes, and I actually had a similar one myself for a while.
    It’s true, the sound quality was very good, but unfortunately I often saw this model with a ‘beetroot-coloured’ tint – poor-quality picture tubes.

    It’s worth noting that this Soniak is a later, somewhat ‘stripped-down’ model. The older ones from the early 90s were even heavier, but that’s hardly surprising – inside, the entire rear of the picture tube was encased in metal shielding.

    A Trinitron like that must have been heavy.
    I had a Grundig 100 Hz, which was flat, but the Sony weighed more because of the design of the picture tube. Mine weighed about 15 kg (or was it about 30 kg?).

    I remember them perfectly well, and I actually stuck with that technology for quite a long time. Not only that! For a very long time, I believed that CRTs produced a better picture than LCDs, even though the latter were more modern and were rapidly replacing CRTs. But, as you’d expect, LCD eventually won me over too, and it turned out I’d been wrong.

    It does seem strange, though, that a 21-inch screen used to be the ‘standard’ size, a 29-inch screen was considered a ‘very large screen’, and nowadays a 42-inch screen is seen as ‘a bit small’.

    I’ve already mentioned here on the forum that, as a Formula 1 fan, I saw the best picture quality on a CRT TV and analogue satellite TV; there was real dynamism there, because there was no digital processing whatsoever.     I’d like CRT televisions to remain the norm. I liked those huge, heavy behemoths. With their massive backs. I remember how, in the early 90s, I think it was at Radioelektronik or AudioVideo, they were showcasing the Panasonic ‘The One Up’ TVs. I used to gaze at them dreamily in the brochures. Unfortunately, the prices were such that owning one was nothing but a pipe dream. Modern flat-screen TVs may well have good picture quality, but for the most part, the sound they produce is simply rubbish.

It’s a shame, though these days I suppose only fans of the ‘vintage’ style still use them.
    I gave my second 25-inch Sony CRT TV to a mate at his allotment about 16–18 years ago. And – surprisingly – it’s still in use there to this day ;)

There was a problem with the sound: after a while, the voice coil in one of the speakers started to rub (Bukdoo – I replaced it with a Nokia and the bass quality improved straight away), no Nicam (although it was an option, but only for countries using the B/G system), and no support for stereo on the 6.25 MHz frequency (and, as luck would have it, the cable TV in my town used that very frequency). I temporarily managed to get stereo sound on a few channels by fitting a Rymi audio module, but then there was interference on the Nicam channels (the Nicam carrier at 5.85 MHz is very close to the 6.25 MHz carrier). Overall, it was a somewhat underdeveloped product for the specific Polish market.
    But those were the days. It was the last CRT television we ever had.

    I bought a 25-inch Philips TV in 2000. And on that, Nicam from the terrestrial aerial worked without any problems. The TV worked until 2015 without a single fault

    And I’ve still got a 14-inch one that works – I think it’s a Samsung from 2001 :) I bought it for my wife back then whilst she was in hospital, as she spent quite a bit of time there.
    The TV stands proudly in the cellar, unused, and it’d be a shame to throw it away.

    That’s right. I’ve owned three Sony Trinitron tellys in my life. The first was a 29-inch model, bought in the early 1990s, when production was still entirely Japanese. It cost a fortune, and I still had to retrofit it with a 6.5 MHz parallel audio circuit because the original was only 5.5 MHz. The picture and sound were simply sensational. It even came with a dedicated stand. I don’t know the exact year of manufacture, as I got the TV from a family member – probably the late 1990s – but it was entirely Japanese-made. I used it right up until I bought an LCD TV in 2012. It only ever had one fault: a single resistor in the high-voltage power supply circuit of the picture tube failed. Right up until I sold it for a symbolic one zloty, the picture was perfect.

    As for games, particularly those from the 8- and 16-bit era, you could say that CRT monitors provided both dithering and anti-aliasing in one, in terms of hardware.

    Pixel-art comparison: character blurred with scanlines on CRT vs sharp blocky pixels on LCD/LED.

    It’s practically impossible to emulate this effect correctly on an LCD screen using any sensible tricks.
    The same applies to the light gun; here, the trick lay in the way the CRT refreshed the image.
    You could cheat the system; all you had to do was ‘shoot’ at, for example, the lamp lighting the room ;)

    CGA graphics on PCs, back in the day, weren’t as garish – for example, with the colour magenta – as they’re perceived today, or even in the VGA era.
    Graphics cards and monitors from the CGA era generated images slightly differently to later standards, and the result was generally quite acceptable.
    But that’s ancient history now ;)

    That’s true. If you play PlayStation 1 on a modern TV today, the graphics can be quite off-putting, but I remember as a kid that it didn’t look too bad on old tellys.
    It’s much the same with older computer games on low-resolution CRT monitors.

    If anyone fancies having a look at what televisions used to be like, I highly recommend this blog – it’s a sort of virtual museum of CRT televisions, including ‘inside views’. Compared to models from the 70s and 80s, this Sony looks like a poor younger cousin on the inside.

    I remember when, after the old black-and-white Unitra, the 21-inch Curtis colour TV with a remote control and a video recorder made its debut in living rooms. What times those were – the VHS craze... Then came the Panasonic with a 29-inch flat CRT – it was so heavy it made my back ache XD. For the computer, there was a 17-inch CRT monitor with a flat screen – it’s a good thing technology has moved on, because, unfortunately, after just a few hours in front of a CRT, my eyes would get very tired. These days, my LCD TV doubles as a monitor, and I can stare at it for over a dozen hours without feeling tired or experiencing any eye strain.
