• AVATTO does not supply a printed booklet for the S16 Pro; the official user guide is a single-sheet PDF (multilingual EN/CN) that can be downloaded here:
https://www.intellihome.gr/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Avatto-S16.pdf
• The AVATTO S16 Pro is not a wall-light switch. It is a Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz + RF433 / 315 MHz + 38 kHz IR “Universal Remote Controller” that allows you to replace traditional infrared and RF hand-held remotes and control the appliances from the Tuya/Smart-Life mobile app or from Amazon Alexa / Google Assistant.
Key points
– USB-powered (5 V / 1 A, micro-USB) disk-shaped hub Ø 65 mm × 21 mm
– Omni-directional IR range ≤ 10 m, RF range typically 15-30 m (open space)
– Learns unlisted IR codes (DIY) and rolling-code-free RF codes at 433 / 315 MHz
– Works only on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; 5 GHz is not supported
– App pairing: long-press the top button 5 s → LED flashes rapidly → add “Universal Remote (Wi-Fi)” in Tuya/Smart-Life
Device purpose and architecture
• The S16 Pro is essentially a low-power ESP-based Tuya module driving an IR LED ring plus an ASK/OOK RF transmitter.
• All intelligence (code library, scenes, timers, voice skills) resides in the Tuya cloud; the hub only transmits raw IR/RF frames.
Hardware layout
• Top cap with multifunction LED/button (Power / Wi-Fi status / Factory reset).
• 360-degree IR LED ring (38 kHz carrier).
• Single PCB with ESP8266-EX (or CB3S Tuya module), RF PA, IR drivers.
• Micro-USB type-B connector (5 V ± 10 %, 1 A).
| Electrical / RF specifications (from the official sheet & FCC report) | Parameter | Value | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power | 5 V DC / ≤ 1 A | Any phone charger is fine; avoid fast-charge >5 V | |
| Wi-Fi | IEEE 802.11 b/g/n, 2.4 GHz | DHCP only; WPA/WPA2-PSK | |
| IR | 38 kHz, ≤ 10 m LOS | Uses eight IR diodes for 360° coverage | |
| RF | 433.92 MHz (+315 MHz on “Pro”) | OOK/ASK, fixed code only | |
| Temp | 0 – 60 °C | Humidity 0–95 % RH non-condensing |
Pairing / commissioning workflow
a) Plug in USB → LED steady red
b) Press top button 5–7 s → LED flashes fast (EZ mode).
c) In Tuya/Smart-Life → “+” → “Small Home Appliances → Universal Remote (Wi-Fi)” → enter 2.4 GHz SSID + key → confirm LED is blinking.
d) After ~30 s device is added; rename and assign to a room.
e) If EZ fails, long-press again → LED slow flash (AP mode) → app instructs phone to join the “SmartLife-XXXX” hotspot → continue.
Adding appliances
• IR: choose category (TV, AC, Fan, STB, Projector, etc.) → brand → Quick Match → test at least three keys.
• If no match: DIY → point original remote at S16 Pro (≤ 5 cm) → learn button-by-button. DIY codes cannot be used with Alexa/Google.
• RF: choose “RF Remoter” inside the app → hold original RF key when prompted. Rolling-code (e.g., Somfy RTS) is not supported.
Typical automations
• Scenarios: Temperature > 35 °C → switch on AC (requires a Tuya temperature sensor).
• Schedules: Turn TV off at 23:00 daily.
• Voice: “Alexa, turn on Living-Room Fan” (after linking Smart-Life skill).
Indicator states
• Solid Red = powered, idle, normal Wi-Fi
• Fast flash = EZ pairing
• Slow flash = AP pairing
• Short flash = Command transmitted
• Newest firmware (2023-07 or later) supports Matter-bridge beta inside Tuya ecosystem (not yet public for S16 Pro – planned 2024).
• Some community members successfully flashed Tasmota via Tuya-Convert (old batch, 2022). Since mid-2023 modules are TLS-locked; UART flashing with 3 V3 is still possible for advanced users.
• Third-party integrations: Home-Assistant detects the device through Tuya-Cloud-MQTT; local-LAN API is not exposed.
• Why only 2.4 GHz? 2.4 GHz offers greater range through walls, and cheap ESP8266 modules do not include 5 GHz radios.
• Why RF433/315? Many budget blinds, sockets, relays use simple OOK modulation at those bands; adding RF vastly increases compatibility versus IR-only hubs (e.g., Broadlink RM4 mini).
• Storing IR codes of commercial remotes generally does not violate copyright, but retransmitting RF codes for security devices (garage doors, alarms) can breach local radio regulations or insurer policies.
• Always respect GDPR/CCPA when sharing device control; Tuya cloud stores appliance names and usage logs.
• Placement: elevated, no obstruction, roughly room-centre for best IR coverage.
• Power: use a 5 V wall adapter on an unswitched outlet so that scheduled tasks still work.
• Troubleshooting checklist
– Wi-Fi add fails → confirm router is 2.4 GHz only / WPA2, disable “Wi-Fi isolation”.
– Appliance not responding → check line-of-sight, distance < 10 m, correct IR library selected.
– RF pairing fails → verify original remote uses fixed code; rolling code will not learn.
• The model name “S16 Pro” is also (incorrectly) used by some sellers for AVATTO wall switches; those products have different wiring and manuals. Always verify the photo: the remote hub is a small puck with USB, the wall switch is 86 × 86 mm mains-powered.
• Tuya cloud services are hosted outside the EU for some regions; enterprise users may need on-prem gateways for compliance.
• Local-only firmware (Tasmota-IR, ESPHome) to eliminate cloud dependency.
• Matter bridge roadmap for Tuya IR/RF hubs.
• Rolling-code RF implementation with SDR capture and replay (legal restrictions!).
The AVATTO S16 Pro is a compact USB-powered universal IR + RF remote hub. Download the official PDF manual from the link above, pair the device through the Tuya/Smart-Life app in EZ or AP mode, add your IR/RF appliances, and optionally enable Alexa/Google voice control. Place the hub centrally, ensure a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection, and use the app for scenes, timers, and sharing. Be aware of naming confusion with unrelated “smart switch” models and of the cloud-based nature of the stock firmware.
