ER70S-6 TIG rod is used for TIG welding mild steel and many low-alloy carbon steels. It is a general-purpose carbon-steel filler rod commonly used for fabrication, repair, automotive work, structural steel, sheet metal, tanks, farm equipment, frames, brackets, and similar steel parts.
Its main advantage is that it contains relatively high manganese and silicon deoxidizers, so it performs well when the base metal has light mill scale, light rust, or less-than-perfect surface preparation compared with some other mild-steel TIG rods.
Key uses:
It is not for stainless steel, aluminum, cast iron, or high-strength alloy steels unless specifically approved by a welding procedure.
The designation ER70S-6 tells you what the filler metal is intended for:
| Designation part | Meaning |
|---|---|
| E | Electrode |
| R | Rod; usable as filler rod for TIG or wire for MIG |
| 70 | Deposited weld metal has approximately 70,000 psi minimum tensile strength |
| S | Solid wire/rod |
| -6 | Chemical composition class with relatively high silicon and manganese deoxidizers |
In TIG welding, ER70S-6 is used with the GTAW process on carbon steel. The usual shielding gas is 100% argon, and the usual polarity is DCEN, or direct current electrode negative.
The rod is popular because the added silicon and manganese help clean up oxygen and minor surface impurities in the weld puddle. This reduces the risk of porosity and helps produce a smooth, wet bead. The weld puddle is usually more fluid than with some other mild-steel TIG rods, which can be helpful for fillet welds and cosmetic work.
However, “more tolerant of contamination” does not mean the steel can be dirty. TIG welding still requires good cleaning. Oil, paint, heavy rust, galvanizing, grease, and heavy mill scale should be removed before welding.
| Rod type | Typical use |
|---|---|
| ER70S-2 | Often chosen for high-quality TIG work, pipe, and applications needing good toughness or controlled puddle behavior. Contains additional deoxidizers such as aluminum, titanium, and zirconium. |
| ER70S-3 | Used on clean mild steel. Less deoxidizing capacity than ER70S-6. |
| ER70S-6 | General-purpose mild-steel rod. Best choice when the steel may have light mill scale, light rust, or when good wetting and smooth bead appearance are desired. |
For many shop and repair applications, ER70S-6 is the default mild-steel TIG rod because it is forgiving and produces good-looking welds.

Typical TIG setup:
One practical issue with ER70S-6 is that the silicon can form small glassy deposits on the weld surface, often called silica islands. These should be removed before painting, coating, or making additional weld passes.
ER70S-6 TIG rod is a mild-steel filler rod used for welding carbon steel and low-alloy steel. It is especially useful for general fabrication and repair because its silicon and manganese content improve deoxidation, bead appearance, and tolerance to light rust or mill scale. It is a good all-around choice for mild steel, but it should not be used for stainless steel, aluminum, cast iron, or high-strength alloy applications unless specifically qualified.
