[Solved] How to know if someone is recording me via a laptop webcam - e-mail from a hacke

Hello,
The webcam in my laptop is always stuck with a plaster, I only remove it when talking on Skype.
And it happens that I forget to put the patch back on for several hours.

So I have a question, how can I recognize if someone can record me during this time?
Is the webcam LED lit during such recording? Is it possible to record without a lit diode?

I am asking because I just got an e-mail from some hacker (no attachments, but with a link to the alleged movie) saying that he allegedly recorded me. I didn't open the link.
And, of course, he demands money. Otherwise it will send the video to all my contacts.

So I would like to know if this is an ordinary fake, if he could actually record me when, for example, I undress.
