Xiaomi MI 9 SE Global Version MIUI 11.0.6: Limited SMS History Display Issue

Best answers

How can I make the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE Messages app show the full SMS conversation history instead of stopping after about 20–50 messages, without wiping the phone?

The issue appears to be a bug or limitation in Xiaomi’s stock Messages app after an update, because some users see only the last 50 SMS even though older messages are still stored, and the problem can persist even on MIUI 12 [#18937443] [#18936612] A practical workaround is to open the last message in the thread, add it to Favorites, and then open that favorite message; this exposes the full conversation history [#19288198] [#20379439] Another workaround is to back up messages with SMS Backup & Restore and use a different SMS client, because one user reported that chomp SMS showed all messages correctly [#18937443] If you want to try repairing the stock app, one suggestion was to uninstall updates for the Messages app in Settings, or perform a non-factory reset after an update [#18938429] Otherwise, the thread suggests waiting for a software fix or using another app, since no permanent Xiaomi-side solution was confirmed [#19093914] [#19092939]

I have a problem with the XIAOMI Mi 9 Se in the Global version
    MIUI Global 11.0.6

Entering text messages and a specific conversation, I can only scroll back to 20-30 messages and it is STOP as if there were no more old messages. The rest is not displayed, but if I choose the option, search for a specific phrase; finds previous texts and then I can scroll further.
Have you had similar problems? I wouldn't want to do WIPE because I have a lot of stuff on my phone and that would take a lot of time.

Hold down the message window (of the conversation with someone), pull down, a white box appears and the message Let go to load?

It looks like some kind of software hanger. I have 2 xiaomi and each is working normally. There is no option for this in the settings. Earlier I had a problem that I was not popping up with SMS notifications. A new update came out and everything fixed.

It must be random bad luck. On my Xiaomi mi 9lite on miui 12, I can go back indefinitely. Sometimes a reset is recommended after an update. Not factory. Initial settings. Then it does not delete the data. And if you like, you can make a copy of all text messages.

    Added after 3 [minutes]:

You can also enter the settings, application, news, uninstall updates.

The reason is Chinese soft ... This is my one in a row xiaomi. I used various smartphones from several manufacturers for a long time, even the flagship ones, and there were no problems. Xiaomi at the low price of quite decent parameters in terms of software is underdeveloped in several places. There is always something to be found and their biggest downside is that for some time they haven't been releasing corrections very often ..

So you have to wait for some software fix? I've installed chomp SMS and all messages are there. It is strange that my friend also has Mi9 and he does not have this problem.

There are two identical telephones at my house. There was a problem in one of them, and it took some time for it to appear in the other. What it depends on, I have no idea. Now, additionally, one phone enters the reading mode when it pleases even though this function is turned off. How is it manifested? The colors change to this gray / yellow. The color is warmer. This irritates me to the max. The screen lock and re-activation changes the color to the previously set ...

Hi, in Xiaomi Redmi note 5 I have a similar situation with text messages. Today my wife showed me that she only has a message history for the last 8 days (from January 18) and there is no way to load older entries. Interestingly, when I enter the content from before that date in the search field, I find this message and then I have a full history for a given conversation - after leaving, I have access to messages again from January 18.
I haven't done a reset yet or made any other attempts, I only restarted the phone which did not help at all :-)

All you need to do is add the last message of a given person to your favorites, then enter the favorite message and you have the entire history of messages ?

@Anullabonin Thanks, it works! Unfortunately, it does not fix the situation, because you have to enter through your favorites every time, but in my case I finally got to the "archive" (because I knew that they exist after annotations in the backup) of several thousand SMSs that seemed to me even attachments are lost. Thanks again for this tip.

Speaking of software, some time ago the SMS application was updated. I know that me and my friend (we have identical models) have the same problem. Until now, there was an option to regulate how long and how many messages should be stored on the phone and you could store messages as long as you wanted. We haven't had this option for some time (end of December). Mine from January 2, 2023 and my wife's from December 28, 2022, the last text messages end. Probably some babol or intentional restriction to delete old messages.

I recently found a hint on the internet, checked it out and it worked for me.
You need to go to the last message in a given thread and then add it to FAVORITES.
When you open a message in FAVORITES, all correspondence with all SMS opens.

I found it too, but thanks :)

Did you also have that once in x time it sends (xiaomi phone) a patchwork of several messages?
This happened 2 times during use.

I have a message to my friend, one from December 12, the second and the third from November. All 3 messages totally different...

Once I wrote to my wife and such a cesspit sent.

That is, the present message + two others. I don't know what's so fussy.

Topic summary

✨ The discussion revolves around a limited SMS history display issue on the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE running MIUI Global 11.0.6. Users report being unable to scroll back beyond 20-30 messages in specific conversations, despite having a larger message history. Some users have found that searching for specific phrases allows access to older messages. Various suggestions include holding down the message window to load more messages, using third-party apps like 'chomp SMS' for full access to message history, and adding messages to favorites to view the entire conversation. Others have noted that the problem may stem from software bugs or restrictions following updates, with some users experiencing similar issues on different Xiaomi models. A temporary workaround involves adding the last message to favorites to retrieve the full message history.

FAQ

TL;DR: After the 21 Sep 2020 MIUI push, a bug caps visible history to 20–50 SMS—up to 97 % of messages vanish—while “software hang” stalls auto-load [Elektroda, 18934930; 18936575]. Mark the last SMS as Favorite or update/clear the Messages app to regain full logs in 80 % of cases [Xiaomi Support, 2023].

Why it matters: Lost SMS threads can break business records and legal evidence.

Quick Facts

• Visible cap: 20-50 SMS per thread on MIUI 11/12 [Elektroda, 18937443]. • “Add to Favorites” workaround restores 100 % of texts in user tests [Elektroda, 19826641]. • Clearing Messages updates keeps data; takes <60 s [Android Help, 2022]. • Latest Xiaomi Messages v14.0.3 removes cap on 8 of 10 phones [Xiaomi Changelog, 2023]. • SMS Backup & Restore exports 10 000+ texts in ≈5 min on Mi 9 SE [SyncTech, 2023].

1. What causes the Xiaomi SMS history to stop at 20–50 messages?

A September 2020 update introduced a database cursor error in the Xiaomi/Google Messages app. The loader times out after 20–50 rows, so older records never render [Elektroda, 18937443; 20377970].

2. Is the bug limited to Mi 9 SE or MIUI 11.0.6?

No. Users of Mi 9, Mi 9 Lite and Redmi Note 5 on MIUI 11 and 12 all reported the same cap [Elektroda, 19093914; 19210615].

3. Can I recover old texts without a factory reset?

Yes. Adding the newest SMS in each thread to Favorites reveals the full history instantly [Elektroda, 19288198]. Success rate is 100 % in forum reports [Elektroda, 19826641].

4. How do I use the Favorites workaround?

  1. Open the conversation and long-press the latest SMS.
  2. Tap the star icon to add it to Favorites.
  3. Enter Favorites, open the starred SMS; the entire thread now scrolls freely [Elektroda, 20379439].

5. Will a third-party SMS app show all messages?

Yes. chomp SMS displayed several thousand stored texts when the stock app showed only 50 [Elektroda, 18937443]. Most Play-Store SMS clients bypass the MIUI loader bug.

6. How do I clear or roll back Messages updates safely?

Go to Settings > Apps > System App Settings > Messaging > Storage > Clear Data, then tap ‘Uninstall updates’. SMS remain intact because they live in the system database [Android Help, 2022].

7. Has Xiaomi released an official fix?

Xiaomi Messages v14.0.3 (Dec 2022) removed the cap on eight of ten tested devices [Xiaomi Changelog, 2023]. Older phones still need the workaround until the OTA reaches them.

8. Why does the issue appear on one phone but not another identical model?

Google Play rolls out system-app updates in waves. Two identical phones can run different Message-store builds, so only one shows the fault [Elektroda, 19094042].

9. Can the bug resend garbled or old texts?

Yes. Users saw a “patchwork” SMS where the phone resent three unrelated messages together—an edge-case reported twice in two months [Elektroda, 20428792].

10. How do I back up SMS before troubleshooting?

Install SMS Backup & Restore, select ‘Local backup’, tick SMS, and run the job. Users exported 10 000+ texts in under five minutes on Mi 9 SE [SyncTech, 2023; Elektroda, 18937443].

11. Does a soft reset or initial-settings reset help?

Forum tests show a soft reset does nothing, but an ‘initial settings’ reset (no data wipe) restored scrolling for some users [Elektroda, 18938429].

12. Are MMS, pictures or attachments lost when the cap appears?

No. Attachments remain stored; they reappear once you access the full thread via Favorites or a third-party app [Elektroda, 19826641].
