No option to view photos and videos in Messenger on Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro

Why is the "view photos and videos" option missing in Messenger on my Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, and how can I restore it?

The missing gallery option in Messenger is most likely an account-specific Facebook/Messenger bug or a temporary feature rollout, not a problem with the Xiaomi phone itself [#19897221][#19925147] Check Facebook’s settings in both the app and a web browser, because one reply suggested the option may be disabled there, and the browser view showed different media settings behavior [#19883887][#19884471][#19884003] If reinstalling Messenger does not help, try an older version of the app and turn off automatic updates, since that was suggested as a workaround [#19887197] One user also reported the problem disappearing on its own after a few weeks, which suggests Facebook may be experimenting with Messenger features [#19925147] If it still does not return, the remaining advice was to contact Facebook support, although that may be difficult [#19883887]

Hey, I don’t have a gallery in the messenger app. I thought it was my phone’s fault (xiaomi redmi note 8 pro), but it turned out that I don’t have the "display photos and videos" option on any device I log in to. When my friends log in to my phone via ms, they normally have it, but when I go to my account the option disappears. Any advice because I don’t know what to do anymore?
Ps. The problem has been reported many times.
The screenshots show photos of my friend’s account vs. mine (we used my phone)

This massanger looks like it hasn`t been updated. Uninstall it and install it. If this doesn`t help, there is something wrong with your account. Maybe they blocked you for inappropriate content.

I've done this more than once and still nothing. I logged in on the phones of people who normally have galleries, and unfortunately mine was missing there too, so there's clearly something wrong with the account. I doubt it's a ban, because the gallery never came back after the update and I don't send inappropriate content or photos either. I have reported the problem many times and still no response...

I read a bit on the Internet and other people also have similar problems. Not much, but they have it. I guess you ended up in these people`s hospitals. They also did not contact the service department. We have to make it happen. In general, it`s a difficult thing because contacting Facebook is like winning the lottery... It`s clearly their fault. Try. Something else occurred to me. Log in to Facebook from a web browser. Check there in the settings whether anything has been deactivated in the applications on Facebook itself.

I logged in via the browser on my laptop and the gallery wasn't there either, but later I gave the option "play in the messenger application" and the gallery was shown there, even though it didn't redirect me to the application on the laptop (everything was still open in the browser)

Only on a laptop when logging in via a browser. On my smartphone and
on the smartphones of my family members (who normally have galleries on their accounts) there are still NO galleries.

Look for similar settings in the Facebook app on your phone this time. On a similar principle.

On the laptop you say it already works when you enter massanger? If so, log out of your accounts on it and on your phone. Uninstall the app and reinstall it on your phone. It`s a good idea to check the Facebook settings on your phone. Before you do it. I think it`s a matter of settings.

    Still nothing :(
Overall, I can't count how many times I have uninstalled and reinstalled applications. On the second account that I once set up with a friend, the gallery is normal, but the application and phone are the same, so I don't have the strength to do it anymore...

As I said. You`re not the only one who has this problem. I read about it. I think it`s some kind of settings issue... Facebook may have restricted you for unexplained reasons or forgotten about you. There was a period when this option was blocked for everyone. But she made up her mind. If support does not help you one time, you will be left with a new account.

I know, I also think it’s a mistake, that’s all. I won’t create a new account because my current one is 10 years old and I have a lot of memories in old chat rooms. Well, maybe one day it will appear by some miracle, although I’m furious that they updated it by deleting the galleries and then restored it, but not on my account. If contact with them were easy, there would be no problem, but a person can write and write and still get nothing.

Try looking for an older version of the application for now. Once installed, turn off automatic updating.

I have one more question. I installed messenger through a browser from this website yesterday. There was no gallery, but the update I made on Google Play was visible. After the update, the gallery appeared under the name "display photos and videos". I was overjoyed. Unfortunately, when I entered Messenger, the gallery disappeared again after about 20 minutes. I logged in to the second account and there it is normally called "view media and files". Unfortunately, it's not in my account again... What should I do in such a situation? Maybe I'm closer to the problem...
Ps. Photos of what it looks like

The correct setting should be display, display media and files. It`s a technical fault. As I already wrote. You`re not the only one who has this problem. You have the same problem on another phone, so it`s a problem with your account. Or as I said. Possibly some option disabled in Facebook settings. Nevertheless, there are more of you with this problem.
Do the first method from this video.

I'm just trying to solve it in every possible way, because sending a notification about a technical error unfortunately does not help, but I see that it is impossible despite all attempts and the problem is their fault and that's it :(

I had a similar problem once and it went away on its own after a few weeks. But after the problem subsided, changes appeared in Messenger, and it follows that the previous problems were the result of FB experimenting with various new features and appearances of Messenger. Be patient and wait a few weeks. If there is no improvement within a reasonable period of time, seek help from the "help" or FB support.

I have the same problem, but the patient is iPhone 13.
On all my contacts, I can view all photos and videos, but with one contact, I have something called message encryption and I'm not bothered.

FAQ

TL;DR: Some accounts regain Messenger’s “View photos and videos” after 3 years; “After 3 years, the gallery itself returned.” This FAQ helps users whose media gallery is missing across devices, with fixes, workarounds, and timelines. [Elektroda, arturkarman, post #21284842]

Why it matters: Media history helps you recover shared files and confirm account-level Messenger bugs.

Quick Facts

What exactly is the missing “View photos and videos” option in Messenger?

It’s the media gallery link in a chat’s details. Some app versions label it “Display photos and videos,” others say “View media and files.” When it disappears, the quick gallery view is gone, but your shared items still exist in the chat history. [Elektroda, annahojka13, post #19897103]

Is this a phone issue (Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro) or an account issue?

Evidence points to an account issue. The option is missing on every device for one account, yet present for others on the same phone. As the user put it: “when I go to my account the option disappears.” [Elektroda, annahojka13, post #19867013]

How can I confirm it’s account-related?

Try this 3-step check:
  1. Log your account into a friend’s phone where the gallery appears for them.
  2. If it’s still missing, your account is affected, not your phone.
  3. Log your friend into your phone; if they see it, that confirms it. [Elektroda, annahojka13, post #19867013]

Can it fix itself without me doing anything?

Yes. One user reported the problem vanished after a few weeks, coinciding with visible Messenger changes. They concluded Facebook had been experimenting with features. “It went away on its own after a few weeks.” Waiting a short period can pay off. [Elektroda, iagre, post #19925147]

What if it still hasn’t returned after months or years?

Patience can still win. Another user saw the gallery return after 3 years. Their words: “After 3 years, the gallery itself returned.” Long delays suggest server-side flags or staged rollouts that eventually catch up to affected accounts. [Elektroda, arturkarman, post #21284842]

Why do I see “message encryption” on one chat and no media list on iPhone?

That chat is end-to-end encrypted. Encrypted threads display “message encryption” and use different controls. Some features may be limited compared with regular chats. Check for the lock icon and review that chat’s settings for available options. ["About end-to-end encrypted chats in Messenger"]

What settings should I check before giving up?

Open Facebook in a web browser and review application-related settings. Then check the Facebook app’s settings on your phone for anything disabled. As one helper noted, “It’s a technical fault,” so settings checks are quick sanity tests before waiting. [Elektroda, winmap, post #19897221]

Should I reinstall Messenger or log out and back in?

Yes, try a clean sign-out and reinstall. Log out of Facebook/Messenger on your laptop and phone. Uninstall the Messenger app. Reinstall, then sign in again. This resets local state, though it may not fix account-level flags. [Elektroda, winmap, post #19884723]

Can using an older Messenger version help?

Some users try rolling back to an older build and disabling automatic updates. This can temporarily restore missing UI options until the server toggles them again. If you test this, remember to turn off auto-updates. [Elektroda, winmap, post #19887197]

Why did the option appear after an update and then vanish again?

One report showed the gallery appeared post-update, then disappeared about 20 minutes later. That behavior points to a server-side flag overriding the app UI. Short-lived returns are an edge case, not a permanent fix. [Elektroda, annahojka13, post #19897103]

Will logging in via a web browser help me view media?

It can. Logging in from a laptop browser surfaced the gallery even when the mobile app hid it. Use Facebook in a browser, open the chat, and look for the media section there. [Elektroda, annahojka13, post #19884003]

Could my account be restricted by Meta?

One responder suggested a possible restriction for inappropriate content could remove features. The original poster denied any such behavior. There’s no confirmation in the thread, so treat it as speculation only. [Elektroda, winmap, post #19881254]

Will switching to another account help, even on the same phone?

Yes. The same app and phone showed the gallery on a second account, but not on the primary account. That confirms the issue can be account-specific rather than device-specific. [Elektroda, annahojka13, post #19885986]

Is this linked to Facebook testing new features?

Likely. A user saw the problem end, then Messenger’s interface changed soon after. They attributed the outage to Facebook experimenting with features and appearance. Feature flags often roll out unevenly. [Elektroda, iagre, post #19925147]

How do I report this bug to Meta?

In Messenger, tap your profile, find Help or Report a Problem, and submit details and screenshots. Include that other accounts on the same device have the option. Then monitor for updates or rollbacks. ["How do I report a problem with Messenger?"]
