Remote Control Signal Amplifier

Hello,
I'm using the transmitter and receiver from a toy RC car in a project of mine, and I wanted to increase the range of the receiver. Right now it goes 10 feet tops, and was hoping to extend that range as much as possible. It is a 27 megahertz module (27.145 to be exact) and the remote runs on 9 volts and the receiver 6-9 volts. I do not know much about these kinds of things, so schematics or detailed descriptions would be helpful.

The range can be improved by adding an RF preamp IF the noise floor of the receiver exceeds the noise received at 27 MHz. I suspect the receiver noise floor is below this level and there is no improvement to be had.

The range can be improved by improving the receive antenna IF if the received noise signal on the short untuned antenna is less than the receiver noise floor. An experiment to try is to connect a vertical 8' 8" wire to the receiver antenna terminal and connect a horizontal (on the floor) 8' 8" wire to the receiver common. This is probably the battery (-) terminal.

An alternative method is to increase transmitter power with an external amplifier and/or improve the transmitter antenna. The improved receive antenna will work for the transmitter.

Great. I'm implementing the module, so I don't think the antenna idea would work. However, the amplifier idea seems viable. Would this be as simple as adding a transistor or would I need an external circuit? Could you tell me more about this option or give me a schematic?
