Locating VW Engine Code on Vehicle: Step-by-Step Guide to Identify Original Engine

I apologize for such a laconic question, but maybe there will be someone so polite and write where on the VW engine to find its code. Browsing through the posts and searching in many places, unfortunately, I did not find any information on this topic. I know that you can read this information on the plate next to the spare wheel, but when you are not sure that the engine is original, then ... where to look?

Read the engine number, the first 3 characters are the engine code.

I don't mean to know what engine in my car should be, because I know it (AJM). I read it from the board. But I am asking for tips if, and if so, where can I find such information on the engine block. I am not the first owner of the car, so I cannot be sure that the factory engine has not been replaced, maybe even with a different type. Certainty about the type of engine is necessary for me to correctly identify the necessary equipment parts (flow, turbine, etc.), which started to fall apart.

the number should also be on the sticker on the timing cover.

I am asking for help in determining the engine code that will fit the Golf IV 1.4 16v AXP code. I mean what engines without accessories will fit (engine codes). The original AXP is obliterated and there is no engine with this code in the area.
