I have a tank infrared filter for night vision devices and I would like to cut a circle a few centimeters from it. I've been to a glazier, but this one said it was toughened glass and he wouldn't do anything about it. Do you have any idea for that? I heard that it is possible to laser cut tempered glass, does anyone know something more about it - where can it be done and how much can it cost? Maybe some other ideas for cutting such glass?

There is no use for toughened glass. The glazier was right. It doesn't matter if you tell him to take the risk. He won't want to lose his tools. A laser? This is where my knowledge ends. But I doubt ...

It's terrible ... Such a beautiful infrared filter for photography, only half a meter in diameter ...

Unfortunately, toughened glass cannot be cut, it forms a whole - a network of mutual stresses and in case of loss of cohesion, even a small piece disintegrates the whole network, probably in a thick one - a few mm may be just over a figure missing.

Tempered glass cannot be cut even by a machine cutting with a water jet, let alone a laser.
    Tested and reliable.

It remains to be cut hot.

I also had such an idea once - but it turned out that the night vision filter has a very poor optical quality and the photos came out out of focus. It turned out that the filter was inhomogeneous, as if the glass was poured badly, something like very bad window panes.

Topic summary

The discussion centers around the challenges of cutting a tank infrared filter made of tempered glass for night vision devices. Users confirm that tempered glass cannot be cut due to its internal stress structure, which causes it to shatter if attempted. Traditional methods, including water jet cutting and laser cutting, are deemed ineffective. One suggestion is to consider hot cutting, although this method is not elaborated upon. Additionally, concerns are raised about the optical quality of the infrared filter, with reports of inhomogeneity affecting image clarity.
