Hello, what current should the starter draw when starting the 1.9 TDI engine. In my case, it is about 250 -290 amperes. Is this not too much? Could this be an indication that the plain bearings are damaged?

When starting the engine, starters take 250-600A. In a diesel it will be near that upper limit.

Mine doesn't exceed 300 Amps, but in another VW6TDI car it was also taking about 300 Amps, so I thought maybe in mine the bushings (plain bearings) are out.

It would have mechanical resistance and the current draw would be higher - where is the logic here , think!!!

Precisely the resistance would be higher. That's why I ask if it's possible that a four-cylinder engine draws 300A and a six-cylinder engine also draws the same amount both are warm around 90C. After all, in a V6 the resistance should be higher and it should draw more current.

See for example in older Opels in gasoline how much a Bosch starter takes, and how much a Valeo starter with the same engine. Valeo will turn even on starter cables from Ladybug, and Bosch will not start already with a weak battery.

Topic summary

The discussion centers on the current draw of a starter motor when starting a 1.9 TDI engine, with the user reporting a draw of 250-290 amperes. Responses indicate that this range is typical for diesel engines, which can draw between 250-600A during startup. Concerns were raised about potential mechanical resistance due to worn plain bearings, but it was noted that a four-cylinder engine drawing 300A is not unusual, even when compared to a six-cylinder engine. The conversation also references the performance differences between various starter brands, specifically Bosch and Valeo, highlighting that different starters can have varying current requirements under similar conditions.
