Hello, I wanted to install Linux.

    Exactly Ubuntu 10.10 version:

    Quote:
    ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso

After installation, the system turns on, the console appears, enter the administrator's name and password, and then the following is displayed:

    Quote:

    welcome to ubuntu!
To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo ".
    see "man sudo_root" for details.
    ubuntu @ ubuntu: ~ $

When I turn on the Live CD, the same thing happens, but it doesn't ask for a username and password.

Usually, the CRTL + ALT + 2 key combination switches from the graphics mode to the console mode, and on the other hand, you can use 3-7, I recommend CRTL + ALT + 7 .
I am surprised, however, that you are not logging in in graphics mode, so I do not know if it will work ... Check if your graphics card is supported by this system.

I would also bet on the lack of drivers for the graphics card. Enter what equipment you have.

    ECS HT2000 motherboard with integrated Geforce6100SM-M V 1: 0 graphics
    Sempron 1.6,1GB of ddr2 667mhz ram.

Pressing ctrl + alt + 2,3,4,5,6,7 does nothing.

But then how do I install these drivers ???

During the installation, I had windows etc, the installation went without any problems.

enabling additional executable binary formats binfmt-support
    checking battery state ...

What is the size of this "ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso" file and where did you download it?

    So yes:

After this command, it is the same as it was, but it displays:

    Quote:

    205 packages can be uptaded.
    57 uptades are security uptades.

Now as for the system image:

    Size: 693 MB (Bytes: 726 827 008)
    Disk size: 693 MB (bytes: 726 827 008)

As for which side I downloaded this copy ...

I found the link in the video on the smart guy .... but unfortunately I can't find it right now.

It wasn't any warez, normal side and the choice was the 10/10 one and the older one.

I took the newer one because I thought it would be fine.

Can he do something else about it ???

    maybe:
    sudo aptitude update
    sudo aptitude upgrade

    will help

as for the system, on the official Canonical website [the creator of Ubuntu] weighs 693mb and the Polish remix is over 800mb

Unfortunately, it did not help ...

I guess I'll just try to download a different CD image.

And here I will ask, I am asking you for a page from which I will download a 100% working linux, it may be on pw.

And I would like to ask you one more thing, is this console mode for a fancy ???

could I learn to operate the computer with the console ??

What is he useful for? Well, I understand that sometimes it will be useful, like cmd in windows.

But if there is only such a mode after installing it, what can I do with it?

If you want to learn Linux from the console level, I recommend INX.

But I need a working system to start with to learn, what will give me the fact that I will read when I do not try it in practice.

And to start learning, I would like to have a fully functional system.

"Gusioo" - I understand that you do not use the graphics mode, only the console itself ???

And you can do everything on the console?

If I want to install it, it means that I want to learn something. I know what linux looks like, I have had contact with it.

It's more about the problem that it doesn't work properly for me.

Yes - it is not working properly for you. The Ubuntu you have should automatically start in graphical mode. When selecting a boot option, check for additional boot parameters related to the image some "safe" mode or something similar.

The console is not for a fancy, but only familiarizing yourself with the system allows you to appreciate such an interface. On the console you can do everything (except paint and watch movies) what you click in the windows - only much faster.

However, I would recommend the Polish Ubuntu mix to be downloaded from ubuntu.pl
In addition to better adaptation to the Polish user, it has a script that allows you to quickly install closed codecs etc. [also graphics drivers].

Apart from the fact that you can do much more in the console and faster, it is mainly useful for enthusiasts and for servicing servers.

I know people from FWiOO in Poznań and they do not use consoles - this is why graphic overlays are created to facilitate the work of people [IT specialists are not people ;-) ]

The worst thing is that the author of the thread only insists on one distribution, although he has no idea how to solve his problem.

    @ Pawel1924
Once you run this ubuntu in the console, type startx and then nothing comes of it, run mc, go to the / var / log directory and copy the Xorg.0.log file to the C: partition and give it to the forum.

if you will not be able to do it, think about a different distribution, I recommend it PClinux Os .

I can see that a friend who knows everything answered, and someone reported my thread to the moderator :D

He was outraged that there was too much on the topic ... pathetic.

As for my colleague above, I did not insist on one distribution. They recommended ubuntu to me, I downloaded it.

You're right, I have no idea how to fix my problem, but neither are you.

If I knew how to solve it, I wouldn't post on the forum .....

now back to the topic ....

You have the Xorg.0.log file attached.

You can check for paperwork as problem solved.

Back that year :) I reinstalled the system, it didn't work. I looked for google. I typed commands from this topic and other topics on various forums.
It didn't help ... I turned it off and gave it a rest, today in the new year I turned it on and it works .... It just turned on in graphics mode.

Thank you for your help. Now, when everything works, I can start learning.

@ Pawel1924 if I offended you, I'm sorry, I did not intend to do that, but hardly anyone wants to write the same thing dozens of times, how to start this "damn ubuntu". he did not say that the same effect can be obtained on another distribution, which, by the way, can run without problems.

The fact that it did not start is the fault of Xorg and I am sure that it may start again in the console someday, if you have the possibility, downgrade the xserver (you currently have 1.9.0) because it does not work properly for your graphics card.

Hmm .. Evidently a colleague should also see entries in the / etc / inittab file in which there is an entry regarding the default boot mode of the system. From what I know in this matter, the console mode is 1,2 and 3. The graphics mode should be marked with number 4. And the entry from the beginning of the topic regarding CTRL + ALT should contain F2, not 2. So - switching from graphics mode to the console : CTRL + ALT + F2, - switch from console to GUI: ALT + F7.

Topic summary

The discussion revolves around issues encountered during the installation of Ubuntu 10.10, specifically when the system boots into console mode instead of graphical mode. Users suggest that the problem may stem from unsupported graphics drivers, particularly for the ECS HT2000 motherboard with integrated Geforce6100SM-M graphics. Various troubleshooting steps are proposed, including using commands like `sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg`, updating repositories, and checking the size of the downloaded ISO file. The conversation highlights the importance of ensuring proper driver installation and suggests trying different distributions if problems persist. Ultimately, the original poster resolves the issue after a period of inactivity, as the system successfully boots into graphical mode later on.
