Where can I get a clamp meter to measure amps for a whole week.

    Hi,

I am having trouble with my house using way more power than we should, the national average is under 20kw per day. We are averaging 30kw.

This is surprising because we do not have "mod cons" that a lot of other houses have, such as air con or ventilation system.

I am currently measuring appliances with plug-in meters to work out weekly usage, this only works for things that plug in which is a problem.

However, I feel I need to buy a clamp meter to measure things like lights, oven, and hot water usage.

So what I am looking for is a data logging clamp meter for AC current, that I can leave on a line for a week, come back and it will tell me how many amps have been used.

Does anyone know of a product that will do this? I really feel I need to map my usage in the most cost-effective way possible.

    Cheers,
    Matt.

If you have a 3F power supply, I recommend the Zamel Supla MEW-01 electricity monitor.
The perfect way to control energy consumption at home.

Generally the culprits are not mod cons but common household appliances, perhaps in need of modernization.

Fridge is a good example of an energy vampire. It uses little enough not to draw attention, but does so 24/7. Having one or more freezers will add up considerably to that, with each adding a kw a day or more. These use more and more power over the years as seals degrade and compressor wears out.

Poorly insulated water heaters and associated plumbing also rank high. Standby and other low voltage devices (like security cameras, router and set up box) can add to 1 or 2kw a day.

Now onto your question. It depends if you have a single phase, split phase or three phase instalation.

    One I might suggest:
There is an android app called "my energy meter" that reports instantaneous consumption based on the flashing of the indicator LED on the utility meter. This is usefull to turn things (or circuits) on and off and see the change in consumption. You could start with that as it will cost you nothing if you have a phone available.

For long term usage reading the meter is good. The whole house meters have the advantage of showing graphs on a minute by minute or hour by hour basis, but should otherwise provide similar data.

Doctor to sick person, it's not good, on average nine out of ten patients with this disease die, the sick person turned pale and the doctor says don't worry, just recently nine of my patients with this disease died......It all depends on what equipment you have at home, its class/current consumption, what kind of LED or incandescent lighting...... I have gas heating (bungalow), 48 LEDs in lighting, computer runs non-stop, TV 4-5 hours, two fridges, washing machine 2-3 times a week similarly dishwasher, pressure cooker and 2kW kettle as needed, equipment bought rather recently new and average electricity consumption in summer about 7-8kWh per day. Meter replaced a year ago, not spinning. E.g. what do you heat your water with, in the house we are currently building my son is fitting an 18kW instantaneous water heater for the bath and 8kW for the kitchen although we were given two new 200l heaters free of charge, they will go to scrap as heating water all day to bathe in the evening makes no sense.
