Good textbooks to self learn.

I'm currently in training to be an electronics Technician in the navy and I tend to drive my instructors nuts by asking for too much detail on the systems we work on.
I want a textbook or books that will help me learn about the details of designing things like amplifiers, power supplies and microproccesors. Eventually i want to pursue a further career in electrical engineering specifically in computers.
If you have any good resources or books that helped you learn, i'd appreciate hearing about them so i can start working to become proficient in the field

I'd start with a basic college-level electric circuits book that takes you through the fundamentals of circuit analysis.

This book will teach you the math required to do basic DC and AC circuit analysis. You should have a basic understanding of calculus though, as you'll be required to do both time-domain and frequency-domain problems.

If you master the material in this book, you'll have a strong foundation when you pursue other topics (such as power supply design, filter design, etc.)

Yours is a good question very well asked. I recommend "The art of electronics" by Paul Horowitz. Also, Howard Johnson's "High Speed Digital Design: A handbook of black magic" is also very commonly cite a classic. You can save a ton of cash by looking for used copies on Amazon.

You may also be surprised (I know I am) at how much excellent information and tutorials are available from Silicon Chip manufactures like Texas Instruments, Analog Devices, Linear Tech Corp, etc... For example, Linear Tech has one of the best FREE simulation tools available. Just hit their site, register, download it and you will have a great tool with hundreds of working examples and a huge community (Yahoo groups) to support you.

I've had up through Calculus 3 so that should be sufficient for the book., I'll keep an eye out for it at textbook stores, the new price is pretty high for me

If you're looking to save money, just buy an older version of the book.

Looks like you can buy the older version used for 12 bucks.

This is a mature book, so there's not a lot of changes in the latter versions.

Publishers love to release new versions because it makes them more money.

I've heard good things of Mr Horowitz and his books and will look into those.
And I just got linear techs simulation software, i've been looking for something but all i've found is a half finished cell phone program and professional Cad software. Now i can break things without making radioshack rich

Just for reference, this book is for a 200 level engineering student. Once you master this, you'll be ready for 300 level courses in topics such as microelectronic circuits.
