Can someone please suggest me a good proto board which can easily be used with a wide variety of PICs and other microcontrollers. I would benefit much from your personal advice and experience on them.

The reason I ask is the protoboards in my country are not very reliable, and i will also like suggestins on Development boards.

The ones from mikroelektronika are pretty extensive, and I've heard they're good.

I don't think you can expect one development kit to fit several microcontrollers from different vendors, as they don't always have the same pin-outs. Maybe there is an universal one where you manually route the Vcc, gnd, reset +++ but learning several architectures and development environments at the same time is not recommended (by me).

I'm sorry to say you cannot benefit from my personal experience on this one, unless you're asking for advice on AVRs, which are the ones I know the best. And even then, the one and only dev kit I own is the STK500 which I'm very comfortable with, and can highly recommend for DIP packaged AVR microcontrollers.

I want to add something here.

When you're comfortable and confident with the programming and architecture of you're chosen microcontroller, start placing the chips in real circuits as soon as possible as this is a highly underestimated learning process in the universities today. You learn how it's done in real life, how to route the layout and use your own crystals/oscillators and what not. Even in-system programming is a good experience to have.

There are a lot of breadboard products out there. Sometimes the microcontroller vendors make them available at a good price because they want people to get familiar with their chips.

We also make two with more coming. Our current products are the ReadyBoard-01 (http://www.embedinc.com/products/ready01) and the ReadyBoard-02 (http://www.embedinc.com/products/ready02).
