5 position switch to control electric motor 5 positions?

Hi.
I am looking at making/creating a solution to have a switch with 5 positions (rotary?) to control a small electric motor (servo or stepping?) with a small drive-shaft to stop at 5 specific points (star pattern).

What is the most cost effective and yet simplified setup I could get to achieve this?

Ok so on the motor you can use a multi turn pot, value not. The value at this point not that important. To that motor fix the pot mechanically and to the pot you Ned a precision voltage reference ( in one scheme that doesn't use balanced bridge).

On your rotary switch you are going to fix different resistor values ( values represent position). To that bank of resistors you fix the same vale of precision reference voltage. You are going to use an opamp that resolves the difference in the two voltages, your switch vs the pot on the motor. You will need a power amplifier to drive the DC motor or a stepper motor driver. In either case the opamp will position the motor shaft until the two signals are the same.

This is simple and it will work. Not that the torque will directly proportional to the position error and speed is indirectly controlled owning to the motor's inertia and load. The control loop will need proper closed loop compensation to prevent oscillation and excessive overshoot.

Does the motor have gear reduction, or have you got that far?

Pot value on the motor not that important at 1st just needs to go past 360 degrees rotation.
