Safety Environment? Even in Workplace?

As an Engineering student. I just want to ask if how can we ensure safety in engineering field of work? Just like in electronic industry it is so dangerous for engineers to deal with problems and technicalities because we are talking of electricity..

For civil engineers, architects and even the lowest position in a building construction..
How?

Is there any program or services that will help equipped employees to be safety and aware to their surroundings?? Thanks all.

Dear Jake,

By and large, no matter what kind of engineering related work one is entitled to do, all engineers during their study learn the basics of safety when it comes to operating machines or during experiments and other group or individual projects. I can recall a heated discussion that followed once when I forgot to wear protective glasses while using a band saw. Though not entirely sufficient by itself, this process should be repetitive enough to make it a habit.

Once you begin work in an engineering-related environment that involves more than designing in front of a PC, its the responsibility of the company/institution to specify and adhere to the safety norms as relevant to the region, the laws and the nature of work.

The only way to ENSURE safety is to follow the rules. Safety related programs are a compulsion by law in some regions, and voluntary in others so take your pick.

Try common sence thats what you have to worry about

If the people that are working with you are reasonably minded and aware of what their actions do, You are reasonably safe

Unfortunately you are always going to get one person who thinks they are very clever and does thier level best to make sure an accident happens

Quite common in the Uk

Example 1

I recently visited a home approx 6 years ago a call out to a washing machine, the customer complaing of leaking water and recieving electrical shocks

On inspecting machine fault was the normal blocked pump with hole in the housing

When I pulled the machine out a chock block had been used to connect mains wiring The amperage was rated at 5amps, way to low for a washing machine

The chock block had got so hot it had melted through the plastic and the insulation such that the neutral was making contact with the earth

The house wiring very old "No RCD", hence customer an old age pensioner was recieving shocks btw floor which was wet and the washing machines casing

Example two


The most common acidents occur when working on electrical DB wiring in a factory Normally whilst replacing wiring on a circuit eg rewiring another main distribution board

Some one decides to switch the power back on or they drop a spanner or screw driver inside whilst you are working on wiring which shorts the bus bars out

You can visualise what happens on 380volts

So its the same old story common sence sadly lacking in industry plus of course the normal trouble makers of which there are plenty of these around as well as cowboys lots of these too Regular little know it alls who are have a go heros and dont quite know what they are on about Also very goid at instructing other people how to do thiet jobs

Typcal examples you will find here are Im a Ex Radar engineer so I can tell you how to service an an ampfier and its that component thats faulty whilst of course bringing this unit into your shop requesting you service this for them Also quite normal

THE MOST DANGEROUS

Service managers example comet who make life very difficult and expect you to fit a line output transformer to a Tv set which hasent even got the correct pin out never mind the correct secondary windings and then promptley demand to know why you cant repair this

Oh you will meet all types of experts in this field ranging from ooo lah de dahs, Directors of companies, salemans your worst ever night mare, The local health and saftey inspector and of course your darling customer who is so very polite and then of course the fitter

Yes not good news any of this at all

Finally we have the importers The designers example The designer in the united states who swear blind "Nothing ever goes wrong with the equipment I designed it so ot never goes wrong " ,what a load of nonsence and how dare you



AND Just to put the cherry on the cake for you.

You can also expect to be thumped assaulted severely, in other words have lots of arguments and finally if you happen to be working in the communications game, God help you

You will get Im losing 5 bill a minute when is this going to be working lots and lots of abuse and of course end up in hospital suffering from a nervous breakdown becuase of the animals that you have to work for and I mean animals

Thats enough to cause an accident itself, example, well so many," If I wrote a book about this it would take me a lifetime and Id never be able to finish it

But there you go such is health and saftey Its an excuse in many ways depoyed to ensure the rediculous and stop work in many cases In other cases yes its definatley needed

Its a very difficult topic this Infortunatley you will find that in most cases nothing is ever done untill someone meets thier death loses a limb and you will be fighting to get compensation for the next 15 years or more whilst they quickly resign, do thier level best to cover it up and finally close the company never to be found again

So you tell me what you do apart from kill them

Not sure if Mark already mentioned this, but safety regulations (if that is, indeed, what you are asking about) differ by region or country. So, it depends where you will be functioning as an engineer.

For a young aspiring engineer, or recently qualified but inexperienced electrician, it's worth stressing a few points:
1) Safety always comes first - always!
2) You need to understand the ethical constraints that come with being a "qualified person". This means amongst other things, that you never compromise under pressure, you understand the limits of your own competencies & you understand the buck stops at your door. If in doubt seek advice from a reliable source, that might be your own institution, local inspectorate etc.
3) Many safety related issues do vary by country & region; but these days things are much "tighter" in developed countries & you should have a thorough working knowledge of all pertinent regulations & safety protocols.
4) If you are working for an organisation ( IE in their employ or on their site,) they likely will have a very detailed formal "Health & Safety Code" specific to that organisation. If you breach that code you could be barred from ever working on that site again! Think for example a petrochemical site.
5) The best attitude to adopt in my view, is a positive view that you will lead by example, & preach the safety gospel. In my experience you can expect your fellow workers to follow & respect your mindset.

Hi Shrikant Kamble. Thanks for your response. I just need Information about safety, hazard and risk analysis because when I will be in my last year of this course we do have feasibility study and I want this to be my topic. "SAFETY , HAZARD AND RISK ANALYSIS IN ENGINEERING COMPANIES"

I do have my books here about that certain topic but it does not contain all the information I needed.
