I lived off grid for 6 years, and built a "whole house" inverter system. You can build a small one, cheap. Go to walmart or your favorite auto parts or marine store and get a small inverter, in the 500 to 750 watt range. These should be under $100. Pickup 8 type 29 marine deep cycle batteries (about 100ah). this will run a 500 watt load for about 10 hours without damaging the battery. add a battery charger (my favorite is solar panels) of at least 50 amps to make sure the batteries get recharged at a decent rate in a decent amount of time. The charger can run full time with the loads, so no switching is needed if the power goes out. the inverter is always online.
