This from Mark Harrington. I am a little surprised, as you (Mark) are certainly not a Luddite. The blob looks like those which have been part of a display (LCD) for years. I have used Autotrax and Client 98 for years, and I must say that making ground planr layers by hand (in Autotrax) took me nearly 1/2 the time of designing a PCB. Client 98 fixed that and now I can go on with other designs. One skill is still very much needed, for instance in designing a PCB, it is best to have sections of a PCB such as an audio power amplifier or switchmode PSU as close to the power supply input pinds of the PCB as possible. I have seen whole designs fail to met spec when this is not done. I only learned this by being lucky to read about it. It made logical sense but it was not obvious, and it is not to others as well. I feel that there is still plenty to do, and my days are absulutely crammed with nwe ideas and inventions which I am patenting. (I am taking time from thaat to write here), These should all hopefully generate new jobs. In fact some years ago a medical invention of mine (combined with that of another inventor) was marketed to Japan, and generated several full time jobs. Thus I think that human ingenuity will continue until we either go extinct or the Western Society collapses as did the Roman Empire. But then there are always the Rats and Cockroaches waiting to be the next masters. Cheers. (this could happen!)

Yes I'm certainly not a Luddite by any means but I am fully aware of the sever lack of training for engineers when it comes to this technology although Yes you could argue alot of this is on the net

Im still currently trying to understand PCM and PAM at the moment "Self taught " Most of my knowledge is purely self taught

Having completed my days in engineering in both domestic and Rf fields

The problems that we have in the UK are quite significant when it comes to training and investment particularly when you request training from companies to comply with modern day demands the answer is normally flat No other than what Panasonic , Nec , Motorola , Sharp, JVC , Pioneer and 1.5 years at uni have taught me

The rest is pure experience field and no how programming wise yes that's mostly self taught and PIc and Atmel also self taught I had an interest

As for PCB design and circuit design that too is self taught All of it by hand

They want £25.00 per year subscription which means you have to have an internet related link All updates are done via Internet You can imagine the cost of this via a mobile phone extortionate so god help you if you are unemployed you simply cant do this or learn this

At 50 the unemployment office despite your capability says we will send you on a course which is nothing more and nothing less that How o write a CV as if we don't know how to do this and this will definitely make you laugh You have to see this abortion of running the Uk to believe this

Most people here cant put up a web site Cant write any code at all and as for maths , English well Good luck Because half the teachers are foreign as well which means lectures are very poor as too standards

They've closed most of the schools down so its miles to anywhere bare in mind this a very small country with the population similar to half the United states and more

Currently Im lucky to have two days work a week if that sometimes and the current rate of pay for someone with my experience would you believe is some £2.90 per hour

A real piss take excuse my french I am blunt sometimes When you want information the answer you get is from major companies we cant supply information or schematics so you lose on work there

Companies closed well it looks like a ghost town in places but of course you never see this In fact Its the same old story we had years ago here

As for living standards well I think some of you wold be puking your guts up if you saw some of this and we have such a wonderful set of property owners that their first idea of getting people housed in decent accommodation is to pick on the weakest throw them onto the streets and then promptly advice them they have to be homeless in the borough

In other words living on the streets for some 4 years before they can get onto the housing list that's if your British by birth Yes

The next thing they do to upset as many people as they can which well you know its working ever so well because this lot are getting so annoyed i can honestly see a few of them picking up a machine gun and lining them up against a wall and shooting them point blank range which quite frankly I cant say I blame them anymore

The beast part about all of this is they honestly expect people here to work for peanuts or nothing in some cases and pay their bills I'm just gobsmacked at what this country does to its own people never mind how they think they can get away with this

My last set of companies that I contacted too jsut folded over nigh that was that end of work and so as a result of their lack of promptness in settling bills etc I lost the contact as too my home I spend the year before last living in a shed through one of the coldest winters on record in fact Im surprised I'm still alive God knows what is must be like for people living rough I hate to think many of them over 50 This is now becoming the norm

I think we could actually make the board by hand and program the bloody thing for the same p[rice and them ass produce this abroad or here for that matter and charge half that price after development and still make money

You walk down the road to buy parts from maplin's and the maximum they aver have in stock is anything is two items that's all they keep so your stuffed there plus of course they want nearly treble what you can buy these for from the net

The Goods that you buy are second rate quality They are just so bloody badly put together designed I'm astonished they haven't walked into their premises and wrapped them around their heads plus of course the attitudes when you ask them to find out information for you although they have apologized 2 years too late unfortunately The damage is done by then

It was also my lab! Not cold like the UK though. Actually you and I share a common background in that much but not all is self taught. I am on a pension, and if Australia were not having a mining industry boom, I think we would be similar to the UK. We also have refugees with similar sentiments to those found there. I think that the pay rate you have is poor especially considering your skill levels. Over here it not that bad but the industry is almost nonexistent. I hope that you are able to concentrate on the positive things perhaps in the hobby area. Actually if things go well for us at Mulpin, there may be things you could do for us too. We are currently and have always been struggling as no US investor will invest here in Australia. So we battle on. By going on, I don’t get to do the inventions as fast as I can go as all the business stuff and dumb questions come flooding in. I honestly can’t see why we are not in the stone age still!
