I think it is about making the op-amp's supply rails modulate according to the o/p voltage. The o/p of the circuit is coupled back to the supply rails via a diode-transistor combination such that it allows the o/p to swing to the full supply voltage whilst keeping the overall supply to the op-amp within its specification. In effect the supply to the op-amp is floating and varies according to the o/p voltage.
