How to cool down a voltage divider

I am a highschool student who likes to dabble in EE. I made a voltage divider to power a stepper motor I have. It requires 9V and I am using a 12V wall plug in. I did the math and using a multimeter see that with my 33 Ohm and 100 Ohm resistors I am indeed getting around 9V, but noticed that the 100 Ohm resistor gets incredibly hot. Is this to be expected in a voltage divider? This is my first one I have made as I usually use voltage regulators. Is it normal for the second resistor to get so hot?

Well, you are dumping too much power on the resistor, possibly higher than it's rating. Why can't you use a LM317 (variable voltage reg) to get the required 9V. You might still need a heat sink but it is much more efficient and the stepper receives REGULATED power, A potential divider will have poor regulation, at best.
Try a resistor with a higher power rating (1W or 0.5 W), if you insist on using the same circuit.

Then some simple ratio mathematics or kirchoffs law so that he / she can work out current through his / her resistor divider network

Voltage readings ?? Graphed waveforms drawn or computerised plots maybe , hmmm Could be helpfull couldnt it ?? etc etc etc

Finally notice the words stepper motor !! Interesting A stepper motor doesent just work from a dc source does it ? You have to have some type of control ic or transitor network to turn the motor x amount of degrees through one revolution Interesting !!

So another question would be I would have thought how much current does your whole circuit consume

Calculate I square R and choose the resistor wattage 4 times of that.

A voltage divider is a simple circuit which turns a large voltage into a smaller one. Using just two series resistors and an input voltage, we can create an output that have the hardware and resources to learn and play with cool electronic gadgetry. Voltage divider wont be sufficient because the voltage output will be recommended to use to cool down the voltage regulator,

Zener diode, is temperature sensitive which will effect its voltage regulation, plus it draws 0.6v from the power supply to operate and that will cause some certain voltage drop
