Remote Activated Switch

Can anyone direct me to what technology is available for a very inexpensive remotely activated switch that is capable of being activated at great distances, maybe through an app.

The switch only needs to activate a very small speaker and recording.

You should try GSM based technology, if you search for Long distance switch, you wont find any useful information, instead search for GSM based switch or GSM controlled appliances. I have build a GSM controlled home automation project using below link, you can also use that project for your switch:

The main advantage of using GSM that you dont have to worry about distance, you can operate your loud speaker from any where, via SMS.

I may suggest a cheap and simple implementation using RF. Although this implementation may not use an app for swtching , a push button may be connected to an RF transmitter that when pushed sends a signal to an RF receiver connected to a microcontroller which depending on your design may or may not also be connected to your speaker and recording device.

The range of the RF transmitter/ receiver pair used is in the region of a 100m. If you really want large distances of separation or you need an app, then I would suggest using GSM or an IP based system.
