Analog Current Signal Vs Analog Voltage Signal

Good day to all,
Please i need your support and guide on which of these analog Signals I should use in my application. I want to convert the Output analog Signal from a sensor to digital Signal using the ADC peripheral in a microncontroller.According to the datasheet of the sensor,the Output analog Signal is : 0/4 to 20mA, 0 to 5/10V.This Signal range correspond to 50-400°C.
My question is that which of these analog signals is being actually received by the microcontroller.Is it the curren Signal or the voltage Signal.The reason for this question is that,the maximum operating voltage of my microcontroller is 5V. If the actual Signal that is being received by the microcontroller is current Signal,then my microcontroller can still handle up to 20mA.However if the Signal received is analog voltage Signal,then i will have to look for another sensor,since its Output analog voltage range is up to 10V.
I would be very grateful if somebody could help me clarify this concept. My knowledge of electronics is still very limited.thank you all for the usual Support.

I could be wrong but what I could understand is that the sensor can be operated off a 5V supply or a 10V supply, with its o/p voltage ranging from 0 to the supply voltage depending on the temperature. So basically when you operate it with 5V, an o/p of 5V represents 400 deg C. With 10V supply, 400 deg C will give a 10V output. You need to factor this in when you perform the actual conversion - in the sensor is operated with 5V, then then resolution is 0V = 50 deg C and 5V = 400 deg C. Which means that the sensor's resolution is 70 deg C/volt - a change of 1V represents a change of 70 deg over the last reading. Conversely this is 14.286mV/deg C

The current rating probably shows its sourcing capability - you cannot connect a load of less than 250 ohms to the sensor's o/p when operating off 5V supply. With a 10 V supply this means nothing less than 500 ohms.

The 0/4 - 20mA output is used if you have long transition lines because the resistance of the wires does not count in. If you want to convert this signal to be readable by your µC you simply need a resistor in parallel to the ADC-input. Rp || Ri = 5V / 20mA = 250 Ohms. Where Ri is the input resistance of your ADC and Rp your desired current-voltage-converter. If you use the 5V output you can wire it directly to the input (given that your input is capable of full 5V input). If you use the 10V signal simply put a voltage divider at the input.

The ADC input will be high impedance, and it receives a voltage signal.

The microcontroller supply is 5V, therefore you must make sure the ADC input signal to it is not more than 5V.

If the sensor signal is 10V, use two equal (say about 4.7k) resistors (high accuracy, 1% tolerance) in series as a voltage divider, and take the ADC signal input across the resistor connected to ground.

For more exact calibration, put a 1k potentiometer between the resistors, and take the signal from its wiper. You can then tweak it to be quite precise.
