LED photodiode sensitivity: Does a red LED detect red light better than other colors?

Using an LED as a photodiode, does anyone happen to know if its sensitivity increases in response to light of its output colour?
That is, will a red LED (with a clear casing) be more sensitive to red light, a green one to green light, a white one to blue(?) light, etc?

Just google "LED as photodiode" and you'll get more than enough to satisfy your curiosity.  I've heard that white LEDs don't make good photodiodes, because they use phosphors to give the light, excited by (I think) blue or UV LEDs underneath.Tags... if you type keywords in here (eg LED, Photodiode)  then the article will come up in a search with one of those keywords (the search bar is just underneath the "Experts".Cheers // David

Hi Graham-Yes, they do work well as light sensors, but the wavelength is more a matter of the materials used in the semiconductor junction than the color of the plastic casing on the LED. As David touched on in his response- the LED's that use phosphor to achieve the desired wavelength don't make good detectors.  Avoid those. Paul Verhage is an expert on near space balloon missions, and one of the devices he developed may be of interest to you.  It's a photometer that measures light intensity at eight different wavelengths using LED's as sensors.  Look here: BalloonSat Photometer-Rick
