Graduate Electronics Design Engineer: Broadband Equipment vs Defence Electro-Optical Systems

I recently graduated with a first class electrical and electronics engineering degree and have thus began searching for a job. I have attended at least 5 interviews and fortunately have been offered a job for both of my favourite choices. They are both similar roles with slight differences, and I am having a hard time choosing between them. I imagine there are a lot of professionals here that were once in my position so I am hoping for some advice that I may benefit from before choosing. 


Both Jobs are role as an graduate electronics design engineer, both are medium sized companies and offer similar salary. 


Job A 
Specialise in next generation broadband equipment, enhancing cable network performance
A 20 minute commute, the possibility of cycling to work 
a beautiful building in the country side
Monday to Friday standard hours




Job B 
Design cutting edge electro optical systems for the defence industry, navy, police etc (quite exciting!)
A 40 Minute commute, industrial area 
Early Friday finish at 1PM 
Supposedly doing any work for the military is frustrating due to strict legalisations ?




I know these all seem like small differences, but I imagine they have quite an impact when spending the majority of your time doing them. Any advice on the comparison or experiences of the industries too ?  Thank you, I have a day or 2 to decide on which path my career will take, no biggy!

Hi Jack,I had similar choices when I graduated from college. The most important thing I learned, over a long and continuing career, is to make a decision and forget about whether it was the "right one." Life is so full of choices, and some turn out good and others not so good, that you can't keep looking back.I had a choice between a company doing cutting edge research, which I really liked, and a company that was building a standard product but in a fast growing market. I eventually decided on the latter because I wanted to learn about business and marketing in addition to engineering. The company I ended up at ran into serious problems and eventually shut most of the division because they didn't understand the business issues. I learned from their mistakes. Years later I became good friends with an engineer at the other company, and it turns out they had their problems too and eventually their cutting edge research was killed because there was no market for a product.I would say that if one position doesn't stand out for you, then make a list of pros and cons. You can even rank them and total (or average) the rankings. Here are some things I know from experience that I didn't know coming out of college:1. The people you work with are an incredibly important factor. If the people are smart and friendly and you like hanging out with them, that's a big plus. Doing great work with terrible people is daily torture. Great people will challenge you, support you, and give you opportunities. Especially great managers. So think about the people you would be working with.2. If the defense contractor requires security clearance, it may take months or years to get clearance. While you're waiting, you may end up just reading documents rather than designing stuff. That can be a long time to wait.Good luck with you decision, and whatever it is, remember that there will be a lot more decisions like this in your career, so your entire life does not hang on this one decision.-Bob Zeidman

Thank you Bob, that was a really helpful bit of advice. You’re right, it’s not going to determine what I do for the rest of my life. So maybe I should choose my first job on the basis of the opportunity and skills that it will offer me in the first few years as opposed to the industry itself.  I have a feeling that working of the defence industry will probably make me more desirable on my second job, as well as a more exciting day to day experience. I cable job is more desirable on the basis that it’s so near and a really beautiful area, I imagine the environment will have an impact of the months . Jack,I agree with most of what Bob said. I just want to emphasize how important it is to have a good manager and co-workers. Especially on your first job out of school.

In today's world, where competition is too high in almost every field. You have to be proactive and more creative to survive. Today majority of the people convert businesses in a digitalized way and utilize the best digital marketing services to promote their businesses. So, in my opinion, Learn Digital Marketing is the best choice to stay in the market.
