In one of the many Arduino books I have, it talks about using LEDs as a photometer. can some kind person point me to a source of info about using a LED as a gas detector many thanks, Phil

Phil,
I don't think that an LED can be used as a general-purpose gas detector. An LED can detect light (in addition to emitting light) so it could detect colored gas or possibly just dense gas. I found this article on makezine which includes a link relating to atmospheric studies.

Gases will absorb certain wavelength of Infra-Red rays. For example, CO2 molecules absorb midrange of infrared 4.2-4.4 micron wavelengths.The LED is tuned to emit infrared of the desired wavelength and it is received on the other side by a photodiode(sensor). So more of these wavelengths are absorbed more CO2 is present.In this way, it is used as Gas Detector.Hope this helps:)Nancy

I think the LED cannot show the presence of any gas. Especially if it's not painted. I think so because the gas analyzers that are installed in the mines are not based on LEDs.
