How to Calculate Proper Transformer or Generator Size Based on Load in kVA

Hi all,
How does one size a transformer or generator?...Certain articles I read stated it must be 1.5 to 2 times that of the actual load in kVa....Can any one explain...

1.5 to 2 times the MAXIMUM rated load is a good margin. You can go less than that, but at risk of reducing the reliability. If your generator / transformer gets a voltage surge, or maybe a fault condition in the load, it's far more likely to handle such an overload without problem if it is conservatively rated like this. It's not an absolute requirement but it is just good design practice.
