Hi All,
On a generator AVR, what is the function of the transformer?
Is it to step down the terminal voltage so it can be rectified and boost the exciter field voltage??....

I presume you're talking about an Automatic Voltage Regulator? This forum is oriented towards electronics, not power systems, but there are a few people who have knowledge on that (I'm not really one of them But if you can give us more information, a link or a circuit diagram, I'm sure someone can help.

Hi,The transformer on an avr is used to step down the voltage measured on the generator output terminals to provide the avr with a reference voltage, so that it can increase or decrease excitation voltage as required. The excitation supply voltage is generally single phase LV and does not require a transformer in that part of the circuit.
