I have a 12 volt / 40 amp DC motor, and would like to control the speed. The inputs for this motor require 8 ga wire. Please tell me what type of speed/motor controller to use for this application.

40 A fully operational or starting?
In a simple way you can use many SiC MOSFETs in parallel to drive them with PWM with frequency> 30 kHz.
