A trillion, not a trillion ... English, Polish, Russian, how many zeros?

Why do Polish and English number names use different numbers of zeros for trillion and billion?

Because different languages use different numbering scales: Polish follows the long scale, while English-speaking countries mainly use the short scale [#7916300] [#7916507] In the thread’s examples, a billion is 1,000,000,000 in Polish/continental usage, but in English the equivalent name is used differently, so the naming shifts by one step [#7916507] [#7918241] On the long scale, million is 10^6, billion is 10^9, trillion is 10^12, then billiard is 10^15 [#7918241] On the short scale, billion is 10^9, trillion is 10^12, quadrillion is 10^15, and so on [#7918241] So the confusion comes from the same words being assigned to different powers of ten in different language traditions, not from any arithmetic mistake [#7916507]

Why does the Polish trillion have 9 zeros and the English trillion has 12?
Apparently, English (probably also Russian) a billion is our billion. Why is there such confusion with numbers ...

Different language - different names, I don't see anything strange about it. Rather, it is strange that a million have the same name everywhere :P

I understand the difference. But why here a trillion has 9 zeros and there has 12 ... That's confusing.

Because a billion in Polish is a different word than billion in English. So it's not like "a trillion has 9 here and there has 12 zeros." Besides, just like arekadiusz he wrote, it is the other way around: here a trillion is 10 ^ 12, and in the USA, billion is 10 ^ 9. Besides, the difference is not only in a trillion, see it: http://www.jimloy.com/math/billion.htm
