Sometimes it is hard to define the difference between those two items. This article tries to help you understand the basic things that distinguish diplexer from duplexer. Firstly, it will be briefly explained what exactly those words mean and what do diplexers and duplexers do. Then, we will try to point out the main differences which may be helpful for some less advanced designers.

The simplest way to explain the work of a diplexer is to say that it multiplexes two ports onto one port. In this case the ports are frequency selective. The device makes possible the coexistence of signals on two ports which are multiplexed onto a third port, without unwanted interfering with each other. The device is used to enable two devices to share one communication channel. It separates signals of two different frequencies in receive path and combines them in transmit part. By using described here device, we can apply a single cable with two diplexers on its ends, instead of two separate cables. Considering a low cost of diplexers, this solution can not only be more convenient, but also less expensive.

Duplexer is the one which is helpful when you want to use the function to transmit and receive on the same channel at the same time. The device provides the effect of using filters with a common feed point. Specifically, a duplexer separates the two paths responsible for execution of transmitting (from the antenna) and receiving (to the antenna). It allows the use of a single antenna instead of using two of them: transmitter and receiver.

    Differences:

    1. Diplexers are used when we want to use the same antenna line for two types of waves, so it helps to manage two different types of signals. Duplexers are used to make it possible for one antenna to both send and receive data.
    2. Diplexer manages two frequencies, while duplexer is used for a single frequency.
    3. Diplexer enables two separate devices to have one common communication channel. Duplexer is used when we have one device with two functions of sending and receiving.
