    Hello!

    As I am about to perform another maintenance of my laptop's cooling system, I decided to buy an anti-static wristband to protect the electronic systems of the device from damage. On various forums, I have met with many tips on how to use such a band.

    The following ways to connect it have been suggested:
    - to the radiator - I have a PEX pipe installation, so does this connection make any sense?
    - to the elements of the metal installation - only gas is led through metal pipes - can you connect a clamp to gas pipes? Are they grounding - relatively shallow-laid pipes.
    - to the protective pin in the socket - I do not know what to think about it, I have an installation in the TN-S system
    - you can connect the band to the metal housing of the serviced device, equalizing the potentials without grounding - but does such a connection eliminate the problem? Can I be sure that I eliminate potential differences between me and each of the device's components? In addition, the laptop housing and many of its elements are made of plastic, so there is no special place to connect the bands.

    I would be grateful if someone familiar with the topic advised me on how to connect the antistatic wristband to protect the device being repaired and at the same time ensure my own safety.

    If you have a TN-S network, connect it to the grounding pin in the socket. Additionally, a conductive mat for the table would be useful - also grounded.
    By the way - two things:
    - both the mat and the band do not protect 100% against potential ESD damage;
    - I personally consider such security measures when cleaning a laptop as a slight exaggeration ;) but it's not me who risk damaging the equipment.

    Edit: That's what I remembered - of course, connect with the appropriate series resistance, i.e. with a dedicated cable.

    Colleagues, and I have such a question. As you know, connecting the crocodile clip of the band is not always convenient, or if the package says that it is a wrist band, can it be attached, for example, to the leg and then to something grounded? Does it have the same function?
    And my second question: several times on the Internet, I have seen service technicians hook up to, for example, clamps that are lying on the table. The ones with rubber handles. Does such a piece of metal do the trick, as well as connecting to a ground pin?
