Hello, my trunk in Volvo S40 2004 broke down and I'm sure the cable disconnected and I have a question for you - is there a handle on the back of the trunk to open or do I need to take the trunk apart?

As far as I remember only the American version was a handle.
Buddy first, I would start by checking the button by opening the hatch. Disassembly of the panel and checking if the switch works properly. If it works correctly, unfortunately my friend will worry you, it remains to remove the trunk upholstery. I have done it twice and it is not cool.
You must enter the boot through the rear seats and remove the upholstery. Short-circuit the outer pins of the boot lock connector with the cable and the boot should open.

Already 2 times I went cable and I do not intend to pay 80 dychów for sticking the cable so I have to push back.

    Unfortunately.....
I prophylactically replaced all cables in the flexible part.

    Most likely options:
Switch damaged under license plate (frequent failure).
Damage to the lock itself (corroded pins connecting the motor to the body, the motor is plug-in).
Damage to the harness in the elastic part.
    Central locking controller defective

After a year from the last post, the trunk probably repaired ...
