What Linux should be chosen for an old computer?

From what I understand, Linux is the only one.

You probably mean distribution :-) ... but with a single-core processor and only 512MB of RAM you can forget about the comfort of work. As for the merits ... practically every distribution with a light WM (OpenBox, FluxBox).

You can dream about liquidity at this amount of memory :-)

    Debian + OpenBox / FluxBox

    PS

Upgrade your PC with the maximum supported processor / maximum amount of memory - funny money. [for the expansion you will spend several times less than for the OS installation on the site].

A colleague must understand that a single-core processor can not cope with the flash that is ubiquitous in today's Internet. The linux itself and actually a light graphic environment will work on such a monument but youtube is more likely to not be seen on this comfortable. The Pentium 4HT bipartis can walk at 100% efficiency, let alone a historic Athlon. I have Puppy myself on the Dell's historic laptop with pentium 3 and I know what I'm talking about.

Your processor is too old CPU (too little performance) to today's internet.

Topic summary

The discussion revolves around finding a suitable Linux distribution for an old computer with an AMD Athlon processor, 512MB RAM, and an NVIDIA RIVA TNT graphics card. The user seeks a lightweight distribution primarily for internet browsing and learning, expressing concerns about performance compared to Windows XP SP2. Recommendations include lightweight distributions such as Puppy Linux, Lubuntu, and Xubuntu, with emphasis on the limitations of the hardware, particularly the single-core processor and low RAM. Users highlight that while these distributions can run, the performance may not be optimal for modern web content, especially with resource-intensive applications like Flash. The conversation also touches on the potential costs of installation services for the operating system.
