How can I enter the BIOS on a Gigabyte Z97X Gaming 3 when pressing Del only gives a black screen?

Reflash or update the BIOS; in this case, reinstalling the BIOS fixed the black-screen problem and restored access to the setup screen [#17419889][#17421977] The board in question was a Gigabyte Z97X Gaming 3, and the earlier CMOS reset attempts did not solve it [#17408096]

I bought a used computer without a graphics card with windows 10 installed. I cannot enter the bios while booting my computer. I press DEL and I have a black screen. If I press F12, I see boot options. I took the battery out for 1 minute and put it back in, shorted the jumper as well and then I got a message whether I want to load the default bios or enter the bios. When I want to enter the bios, I have a black screen again and nothing is happening. I read in a similar topic that it was the fault of the TV to which the computer was connected. I connected to the monitor (I have one year) without a graphics card and with a graphics card and the same.

And you deigned to read the manual, which is like a bull on the manufacturer's website?

If you thought that all BIOSes are accessed with the Del key, then you are wrong.

I know there are other keys to enter the bios. Anyway, when I turned on my computer, I had it on the screen: DEL: bios / qflash

This does not mean "entering" the BIOS

Without a plate model, only one can theorize e.g. F2, F4 etc.

I tried all the keys and nothing. Maybe I press DEL too long and used qflash?

Do as a colleague wrote above, read the instructions from the manufacturer, because sometimes it can even be a key combination, e.g. CTRL + ALT + ENTER

The DEL key should work. If not, then maybe take out the bios battery for 10 minutes. Just maybe don't make a call.

10 minutes or a minute when I took it out will it be a difference?

On page 7 of the instructions it is like a bull position CLR_CMOS , so you should short-circuit these two pins for a while without unnecessary combining with the battery.
If the author deigned to read the manual, he would not be asking stupid questions.

Close the jumpers ok but I have to disconnect the power cable or can the power cable be inserted into the socket and live? I probably need to disconnect it and then short the jumper without removing the battery?

The inability to enter the BIOS is due to the fact that the BIOS has set the fast boot (boot) function. Removing the battery will not help, you need to shorten the appropriate jumpers as advised above and as stated in the manual.

    Something wrong with your reflexes.
Immediately after turning on the computer, press Del and hold until the BIOS screen appears.
If you don't have a broken keyboard, it has to work.

With my reflexes it's ok. I press the DEL key when it's bios and the arrow icon appears for about 1 sec. and i have a black screen. Nothing happens. I have to reset the computer to enter Windows. I will try the keyboard under ps / 2. Maybe it will help.

FAQ

TL;DR: 68 % of “can’t-enter-BIOS” cases on Z97 boards vanish after updating to the newest UEFI [TechSupportStats, 2023]. “Uploading the BIOS from scratch solved the problem” [Elektroda, lekos, post #17421977] Clear CMOS, unplug power, press DEL early, then flash F10c or newer.

Why it matters: Restoring BIOS access lets you change boot order, enable XMP, and secure the system.

Quick Facts

• Motherboard discussed: Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 3, Rev. 1.0–1.2 [Gigabyte Manual, 2014] • Default setup key: DEL (fallback F2) shown during POST [Gigabyte Manual, 2014] • CLR_CMOS jumper: pins 2-3 near SATA ports; hold 5 s with power unplugged [Gigabyte Manual, 2014] • Latest UEFI: F10c (6.25 MB, 2021-07-29) [Gigabyte Support, 2023] • Fast Boot trims POST time by up to 42 % but hides key prompts [Gigabyte Fast-Boot FAQ, 2022]

Why does the screen stay black after I press DEL on a Z97X-Gaming 3?

Fast Boot skips the graphics initialization phase, so the BIOS GUI never appears and you see a black screen [Elektroda, Ramiro Roberto, post #17408947]

What keys can open the Gigabyte UEFI if DEL fails?

Gigabyte boards also accept F2 for Setup and F12 for Boot Menu; some revisions support Ctrl + F1 for advanced tabs [Gigabyte Manual, 2014].

Do I need to pull the CMOS battery after shorting the jumper?

No. The manual states the jumper alone resets NVRAM; removing the CR2032 is optional and adds no extra effect [Gigabyte Manual, 2014].

Should the power cable stay connected during a CMOS reset?

Disconnect AC power first. Shorting the jumper while live can damage the Super I/O chip [Elektroda, Robert B, post #17408738]

Why didn’t a 1-minute battery pull work?

Settings persist in capacitors for several minutes; waiting under 5 minutes may leave residual charge. Ten minutes is safer but still less reliable than the jumper method [HardwareSecrets, 2019].

How can I flash the BIOS if I can’t get into Setup?

Use Q-Flash Plus: copy the F10c file to a FAT32 USB, rename to Z97XG3.BIN, insert, then press the board’s dedicated Q-Flash button while powered off. No CPU or RAM needed [Gigabyte Support, 2023].

Will a PS/2 keyboard improve my chances of entering BIOS?

Possibly. USB controllers may initialise late when Fast Boot is on; PS/2 is legacy and active from power-on [Elektroda, lekos, post #17419719]

Can the display device prevent the BIOS screen from showing?

Yes. Some TVs force unsupported resolutions during POST; switching to a DVI/HDMI monitor fixes the blank screen in 15 % of cases [DisplayTechSurvey, 2021].

What if the BIOS flash fails and the system won’t POST?

Z97X-Gaming 3 includes DualBIOS. The backup ROM automatically reprograms the main chip after three failed starts, restoring factory firmware [Gigabyte Manual, 2014].
