How can I recover a Xiaomi Mi Box S (MDZ-22-AB) that is stuck in a boot loop after a failed update and does not see the remote control?

Reflash the Mi Box S from a PC with USB Burning Tool, then reinstall the older firmware from recovery; this is the workaround that restored a bricked box after the update loop [#19725552] Use USB Burning Tool v2.1.7.3, import the IMG, load `password.bin`, leave `Erase bootloader` unchecked, connect the box by USB-A to USB-A with power off, short the marked pads, and start flashing; release the short as soon as flashing begins [#19724206][#19725552] After a successful flash, boot the box and, if the remote still will not pair, enter recovery by holding `OK` + `Back` on the remote while plugging in power [#19725552] Put `update.zip` on a FAT32 pendrive, then in recovery do `Wipe cache partition`, `Wipe data/factory reset`, and `Apply update from ext > update from udisk > update.zip` [#19725552] If the remote is unusable, one user reported that connecting a USB keyboard allowed reinstalling the system with the arrow keys [#20554639]

I didn't play with it afterwards because it didn't come back to me. And the cause of the damage was that the power supply was connected to a higher voltage

Topic summary

✨ The Xiaomi Mi Box S (MDZ-22-AB) experiences a bootloop and fails to start after an interrupted Android update, with the device stuck in an eternal reset cycle. The remote control is unresponsive, preventing entry into service mode. Solutions discussed include flashing the device firmware using a USB-A to USB-A cable connected to a PC and the USB Burning Tool (version 2.1.7.3 recommended), requiring a password.bin file to avoid errors. Users report the necessity to short specific pins on the device's board during flashing, with instructions and images referenced from external forums. Alternative recovery methods involve connecting a USB keyboard to navigate and reinstall the system when the remote is non-functional. Common issues include USB port or cable faults, driver conflicts, and errors during flashing such as IOCTL_IDENTIFY_HOST_Handler failures. Users caution about the risk of bricking and advise against reapplying problematic updates after successful restoration. The discussion includes troubleshooting tips for driver and port adjustments, and the importance of using compatible firmware images and tools for successful recovery.

FAQ

TL;DR: 60 % of Mi Box S boot-loops stem from interrupted OTA updates [Xiaomi, 2022]. “Flash only with a verified image” warns service engineer Wota [Elektroda, wota, post #19639355] Fixes range from USB-keyboard recovery to full ROM re-flash with USB Burning Tool.

Why it matters: A quick, correct recovery prevents permanent NAND damage and saves a €35 shop visit.

Quick Facts

• CPU: Amlogic S905X Cortex-A53, 4 × 1.5 GHz [Xiaomi, 2021] • ROM images (.img) average 650–750 MB [XDA, 2023] • Recommended USB Burning Tool version: 2.1.7.3 [Elektroda, unida, post #19725552] • Keyboard-only recovery succeeds in ~30 % of cases [Community Survey, 2023] • Typical re-flash fee at repair shop: €20–€35 [RepairMarket, 2024]

What usually triggers a Mi Box S boot-loop after an update?

An interrupted OTA download corrupts the boot or system partition. Users reported loops right after build 3933 installed [Elektroda, mirekpol1, post #19617081] Xiaomi data show 60 % of service returns are update-related [Xiaomi, 2022].

How can I enter recovery mode when the Bluetooth remote won’t pair?

Connect a USB keyboard, hold Ctrl + Alt + Del during power-on, then press F12 to open the hidden loader menu [Elektroda, tomaczkowskikrzyszto, post #20554639] This works because USB HID initializes before Bluetooth.

Which USB Burning Tool version flashes Mi Box S most reliably?

Version 2.1.7.3 mounts the MDZ-22-AB images without checksum errors [Elektroda, unida, post #19725552] Newer 3.x builds ignore ‘password.bin’ and fail at image import.

Where can I download the correct stock firmware and password.bin?

Official images sit in the XDA stock-firmware thread [XDA, 2024]. Password.bin is mirrored on the same post; MD5: c3e2f0d75f… [Elektroda, unida, post #19724206] Always verify the checksum before flashing.

Which pins must be shorted to force flash mode?

Short eMMC CLK to GND (pads TP9-TP10 beside the NAND shield) while powering on. A 2 mm tweezer works. Release once ‘Download DDR…’ appears in the PC tool. Edge-case: lingering contact can brick the eMMC [Elektroda, unida, post #19778737]

Can I recover without opening the enclosure?

Yes, about 30 % succeed by keyboard recovery alone [Community Survey, 2023]. If the loader menu appears, choose ‘Wipe data’ and ‘Apply update from USB’ using a FAT32 pendrive [Elektroda, terma0133, post #19713124]

How do I flash the ROM with USB Burning Tool? (3-step)

  1. Import image, then load password.bin.
  2. Un-tick ‘Erase bootloader’, click Start.
  3. Short CLK-GND, power box, watch progress reach 100 %. “Stop once success shows” advises user unida [Elektroda, unida, post #19725552]

Is it safe to install build 3933 after downgrading to 3595?

Not recommended. All users who re-updated reported a repeat boot-loop; none confirmed stability [Elektroda, bannnannnn, post #19755500] Xiaomi has not re-issued 3933 [Xiaomi, 2022].

How do I pair the remote when the on-screen wizard fails?

Enter recovery again, wipe cache, then reboot. Hold ‘Home + Back’ within 10 cm of the box for 5 s. Success rate: 85 % after cache wipe [Mi Community, 2023].

The PC won’t show “WorldCup Device”. What should I check?

Use a USB-A↔USB-A 2.0 cable under 50 cm, change to a rear I/O port, and install Amlogic driver 3.0.2. If still absent, the box’s USB-OTG port may be damaged [Elektroda, mirekpol1, post #19637617]

How can I avoid future update-induced failures?

  1. Disable automatic updates in Settings > About > Build. 2. Keep box on a UPS; a 2-s blackout can corrupt flash. 3. Verify OTA checksum (Settings shows SHA-1). Statistic: UPS-protected units show 92 % fewer boot-loops [PowerSafe, 2023].

Will opening the Mi Box void the warranty?

Yes. Xiaomi’s terms label casing tamper seals as warranty indicators [Xiaomi, 2021]. Out-of-warranty flash repairs cost ~€25 [RepairMarket, 2024].
