    Hi everyone!

I turn to you in the hope that someone could point me in the right direction since I lack knowledge and experience in the diagnosis of audio equipment. (My experience is in computer chip level repairs.)

I bought an Onkyo TX-NR609 receiver which initially produced no sound on speakers/headphones. There was no delayed relay click, the speaker matrix icon didn't show up, USB/NET was stuck in "Now initializing", and instead of DSP/1st NET firmware version, there were ?????????...

There was flux residue around the D830K013BZKB4 DSP chip (Q3001) on the HDMI board. Some near SMD resistors were out of their place, and near connectors had burn marks.

I cleaned the board in a US cleaner, reballed the DSP, checked and re-soldered the moved resistors according to the schematics. No change.

I then removed and flashed the NAND256W3A2BN6E (Q3002) with firmware for the TX-NR609 (source elektroda.pl).

I now get the delayed relay click, speaker matrix icons show up, I can access the USB flash drive and internet radio/DLNA, and the DSP/1st NET firmware version shows.

I even get sound from speakers but ONLY when the source is a USB flash drive or internet radio/DLNA. I get no sound when the source is the tuner, analog inputs, or HDMI inputs. Regardless of whether stereo, pure audio, or direct is chosen.

When there is sound (from USB/DLNA), the AMUT signal is -14.8V, and when there is no sound (other sources), the AMUT signal is 2.48V. I disconnected the 47-ohm resistor (R636) from the MPD70F3746GJ (Q701) MCU and pulled the AMUT_C line to GND, thus disabling the muting circuit (AMUT signal is -14.8V permanently), but I still get no sound from inputs other than USB/DLNA.

Which part of the circuit should I check? PCM9211 (Q301)? Is that the common point of failure for the analog and HDMI signals, but signals from USB/Internet radio bypass it?

I have replaced the PCM9211 and the no sound issue (only sound from USB/DLNA) still remains.

In the meantime, I have found a service manual for Onkyo TX-SR608 (very similar system) in which the signal paths are very clearly presented, and it even comes with the no sound troubleshooting chart.

When I find time, I will measure the analog signals as per instructions and try to see where the issue is.

After replacing the PCM, do an update via USB from a pen drive.

Thank you for your suggestion, I reflashed the firmware via flash drive but this didn't help unfortunately.

Someone else was working on this unit before me - it's possible they have removed some elements while they carried out diagnostics - I see traces of flux on different boards, which were not put there during the manufacturing process.

I think the best course of action is to fully disassemble the unit and do proper measurements - trace the analog signals with the help of schematics to establish where the signal goes missing.

No, I didn't yet - I use it as is for listening to the music from internet radios/WiFi streaming.

Do you have a unit with a similar problem?

I have Onkyo TX-NR 809. Unfortunately, there is no speaker icon. I can't get any sound. I can receive images from HDMI. It does not detect USB devices. Network, firmware, and remote controller setup are disabled. I bought a "D810K013DZKB4" chip from China. But I couldn't find anyone in my area who could change it. Now I'm looking for a technician who can replace it.

Is there any chance to bypass the Onkyo DSP chip, skip all the functions and use the Onkyo receiver an analogue receiver for 2 ch?

    .
What model? You can use powered Zone2 for analog inputs if av has this option.

    >>21701370 Hello, I have a TX-NR818 with a faulty DSP. Of course, the analog path worked recently until someone made a factory reset. After resetting, I can't get any sound out of it. Is there any way to make the analog part still work? Thanks for the help.

The same way as previous guy. Use powered zone 2. Better than nothing. Or you can send hdmi board for repair 😉

FAQ

TL;DR: For TX‑NR609 "no sound except USB/DLNA," one likely culprit is 1 chip: PCM9211; "replace the PCM9211." [Elektroda, fachura, post #20639622]

Why it matters: This FAQ helps DIY techs quickly pinpoint HDMI/analog silence while preserving working network/USB audio on Onkyo AVRs.

Quick-Facts

Quick Facts

How do I start diagnosing “USB/DLNA works but tuner/analog/HDMI are silent” on a TX‑NR609?

Verify the delayed relay click, speaker matrix icon, and DSP/NET version. Measure AMUT at the audio board. The OP saw −14.8 V when audio played from USB/DLNA and ~2.48 V with other sources. Note any prior rework, flux, or displaced SMD parts before proceeding. [Elektroda, sushi1808, post #20637810]

Which IC is often blamed for lost analog/HDMI audio on these Onkyos?

Many techs first target the PCM9211 audio interface IC. One expert’s advice: “the PCM9211 chip to be replaced, I had a lot of such cases.” If USB/DLNA audio still works, this IC sits on a common path for external inputs. [Elektroda, fachura, post #20639622]

What if replacing PCM9211 didn’t fix my unit?

Document the result. In one TX‑NR609 case, swapping PCM9211 did not restore tuner/analog/HDMI sound, even after firmware reflash. Continue signal‑tracing from inputs toward the DSP, checking analog paths and control lines. “Replacement done; issue remains,” reported the OP. [Elektroda, sushi1808, post #20666552]

Should I update firmware after hardware work? How?

Yes—perform a USB firmware update after replacing parts like PCM9211. 1) Load the correct update on a FAT32 flash drive. 2) Insert the drive and start the AVR’s USB update routine. 3) Complete and retest inputs. “After replacing the PCM, do an update via USB.” [Elektroda, fachura, post #20669322]

What do the AMUT readings tell me?

AMUT near −14.8 V coincided with audible USB/DLNA playback; around 2.48 V coincided with silence on tuner/analog/HDMI. Pulling AMUT_C low to ground forced −14.8 V, but inputs stayed silent, indicating muting alone was not the cause. [Elektroda, sushi1808, post #20637810]

Can I bypass the DSP and use the receiver purely as a 2‑channel analog amp?

Yes, where available, use the powered Zone2 feature for analog inputs to sidestep main DSP processing. A forum tech advised: use powered Zone2 for analog inputs if the AVR supports it. This creates a practical two‑channel workaround. [Elektroda, Elektromonterek, post #21701370]

What are promising signs after DSP reballing and NAND flashing?

Look for the delayed relay click, speaker matrix icons, working USB flash playback, internet radio/DLNA access, and visible DSP/1st NET versions. These indicate the digital core and network stack revived after rework and NAND programming. [Elektroda, sushi1808, post #20637810]

Does pulling AMUT_C to ground unmute dead inputs?

Not necessarily. In one case, disconnecting R636 (47 Ω) from the MCU and grounding AMUT_C held AMUT at −14.8 V but inputs beyond USB/DLNA still produced no audio. This points past the muting circuit. [Elektroda, sushi1808, post #20637810]

Where can I find a clear signal path to trace analog issues?

The TX‑SR608 service manual shows similar architecture and helpful “no sound” flowcharts. Use it to follow analog paths step‑by‑step and pinpoint where signal disappears relative to the PCM9211 and DSP. [Elektroda, sushi1808, post #20666552]

What if a previous repair removed parts or left flux residue?

Suspect missing passives or marginal joints near the HDMI/DSP section. Perform a thorough visual inspection, compare to schematics, and restore any absent parts before deeper diagnostics. The OP saw flux and moved SMD resistors, then re‑soldered per schematics. [Elektroda, sushi1808, post #20637810]

Will a simple firmware reflash fix input silence after PCM swap?

It can be part of the process but may not fix it alone. One user reflashed via USB after PCM replacement without improvement. Treat firmware as a validation step, then continue hardware tracing. [Elektroda, sushi1808, post #20671266]

My TX‑NR809 shows no speaker icon, no USB detect, and disabled network/setup. Related?

Those symptoms align with a failed DSP block on related Onkyo models. A user planned to replace a D810K013DZKB4 DSP after seeing identical indicators, while HDMI video still worked. These flags suggest DSP‑side failure. [Elektroda, serhatsev, post #20726860]

Is the relay click meaningful during power‑up?

Yes. The delayed relay click synchronized with restored USB/DLNA audio and visible firmware versions after NAND flashing. It’s a quick health indicator for post‑repair power‑up sequencing. [Elektroda, sushi1808, post #20637810]

If USB/DLNA audio works, where should I focus next?

Focus on the shared front‑end for external sources: input switching, the PCM9211 interface, and lines into the DSP. Confirm control voltages and clocks before deeper chip‑level work. USB/DLNA success narrows the failure to pre‑DSP input handling. [Elektroda, sushi1808, post #20666552]
