It works and steams for a few minutes and then stops suddenly - even though there is water in the tank. Any ideas how to fix this?

First things first: You would need to check the water pump first. Is the pump pumping, feeding water. The pumps in such devices work in a similar way, on a similar principle to the pumps in fish tanks.
