I am interested in making a Linear Generator. My first experiment is similar to the Magnets shaken through a coil in the Generator Torch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DC-DKSOdwKw

I would like to know if it would be more efficient with a metal core, as is usual in most Generators? If so, please let me know what shape it should be, please.

Terry,
I believe the linear generator shown uses a permanent magnetic for the moving portion. The stator, or coil, looks to be many turns of thin wire. The coil is likely connected to a super capacitor or rechargeable battery though a bridge rectifier composed of four diodes. Using a bridge rectifier rather than a single diode allows it to charge the battery when the magnet is moving in either direction.

I have made the coil and permanent magnets, and rectifier, and it works.
