Electric Stove

Dear Members,

I have an electric stove of 3000 watts, 220 volts. My questions is what will be the power consumption of stove if i drop the supplied voltages at around 180 volts?
What will be the heating capacity of the stove?? will it remain same, will it decrease?? or increase? What will happened to the current???

Good Morning! Keeping the answer simple - the stove at it's hottest setting will not get as hot at 180VAC as it would at 220VAC. With this in mind, running at a lower voltage will cause it to draw fewer amps or less current. I am making the assumption that it is the kind that get hot; ie: elements get RED and emit heat. There is the other kind of electric stove called an "induction heater" were elements don't get warm, but induce an electromagnetic field in the metal pot or pan and it gets hot.

Assuming this is a basic stove with a purely resistive element at a single power level, it's a nice simple calculation: Power in Watts = Volts x Amps, so:

3000 Watts / 220 Volts = 13.6 Amps current.

Resistance in Ohms = Volts / Amps:

220 Volts / 13.6 Amps = 16.1 Ohms

At 180 Volts, current = 180 Volts / 16.1 Ohms = 11.16 Amps.

At 180 Volts, power = 180 Volts x 11.16 Amps = 2008 Watts
(for most practical purposes, say 2kW)

So at a lower power, the stove will take longer to heat food up to a certain temperature, and so cooking times will be longer, and the stove's maximum temperature will be lower.

However, when boiling things in water, the water's maximum temperature will still be 100 degrees C, so the cooking time will be the same once the water is boiling.
