Read all you can on the topic of renewable energy. In fact the place to start is with the question: Where do we get our energy from now? Then ask: how much of the way we make energy now makes sense?
But the real question is historic: How efficient is the way we use energy now? Remember (or maybe your too young!) that in the really old days (1930's through almost now) energy was cheap. Coal was abundant and there was no regard for the environment. Devices did not need to be efficient. And the real key to alternative energy is not to find new ways to power what we have today, but make our devices vastly more efficient and then power them in _elegant_ ways!
My Honda Insight is elegant in its design, will stand-up (figuratively) on end when you push the accelerator and, without effort still get 70MPG!
Waste is still universal. Find new ways to achieve the same goals without waste and the alternative energy sources will quickly reveal themselves.
