I have made the project in the link but I do not want to use optical sensors for checking the presense or absence of obstacles. Basically I want to detect obstacles within 2 feet or so but I dont want to use IR, what other options can I try, I want somethign that is rugged.

This "website":https://www.ia.omron.com/products/category/sensors/proximity-sensors/ has a lot of other proximity sensors that might interest you. They use high frequency oscillations instead of IR and have a wide variety of products not to mention being resistant to the elements, that would qualify to your needs of it being rugged.
