I am trying to build an EMI filter that prevents smart meter switched mode power supply noise from entering my house wiring. I need to wind inductors from 1 guage wire which is very difficult to wind into coils less than 2" dia.
A toroid core this size, if available (seems not to be) would be very expensive. My question is, if I use a core with, say, 20% the cross sectional area of the coil turns, will it have only a small effect on inductance, or will the inductance be almost the same as if the coil turns fit the core tightly?
