Soft Starters for Hydraulic Motor

Dear Experts,
we have a CNC press that has a 22 KW motor coupled to a hydraulic pump. Total power requirement of the machine is 35 KVA, out of which this motor takes as much , rest is for the CNC / Servo system. The hydraulic system is started by CNC after 10-15 seconds after the Power ON. When we run the machine on Public power supply the machine starts and operates well (even though the starting current of the motor is high). But when we start the same on Generator the machine hangs when the Hydraulic starts ( as it draws the starting current) and the system goes down.
we are thinking of putting the Soft Starter or VFD for the Hydraulic motor. My question is

1) whether it is advisable to adopt the Soft Starters or VFD for such system. ?
2) whether it will help in reducing the starting current without putting load on the rest of the system ( CNC)
3) what calculations need to be done in this regards ?

Any one has done such type of modification for a CNC Turret ? then please provide the details.

Any other solution to overcome the situation.

1. Soft starter is advisable, VFD no.
2. Yes reduced voltage starting method reduces the starting current i.e. soft starter, wye delta, autotransformer.
3. Starter is sized according to motor hp size.
4. Seems the generator is undersized for starting a large motor like this.
5. Usually motors 10hp above must use reduced voltage starting methods.
