Need help figuring out a magnetic tool design

i need to figure out eactly how to make this tool. it would be battery powered and have a magnetic coil that would push a rod through the center, that rod pushes against a spring to return the rod once magnet is released. i need to be able to adjust the force and oscilation speed up to 4300bpm. it would need to be able to imply lots of force and only travel the rod about 1". there are mechanical means to do this such as air or motors but i would think energy wise a good magnet would use less power and be smaller so that the unit could be battery powered.

A motor is probably a better bet, with a mechanical means of converting from rotary to a reciprocating motion. However, do the maths to see if a solenoid would do the job.
A solenoids force falls off rapidly as the armature moves out from a central position in the core, and for high speed you will need a low mass armature. They are not easy to design either. Without knowing how much work the armature has to do, it is hard to know if it is possible. You will find a lot of information on the web, be prepared to do quite a bit of maths. If you can't find any free solenoid design software, then put the equations into a spread sheet or something like matlab (or it's free equivalent), making it easier to see how the various parameters affect the outcome.
