Given Commissioning Engineer Supervisor role on first job

Hello folks,

My name is David and was hoping maybe some experienced people here think Im out of my depth?? Ive recently been given the job of Commissioning Engineer Supervisor for a company that make heat recovery generators. They have sites all over the world ranging from 400kW - 15MW turbines. Ive recently just came out of college with a degree in Electrical & Control Engineering and this will be my first job in industry. Im 28 who got a first class honours in my degree and relitivly have my head on my shoulders. Im just wondering will I be in over my head as I know there is a lot of resposiblity with this type of role. Id appriate any advice or insight into this type of work and if you think its easy enough to pick up with a bit of effort.

Seems to me you have been thrown in at the deep end. The company must feel that you have ability, despite your lack of experience. I would hope that they have someone in senior management that can act as a competent mentor.
Sounds like you will have quite a bit of reading to do. You will also need to be able to talk easily to people, particularly those that have been with the company for a while, and take on board, with some discernment, what they have to say. That should include anyone from management through to the plant technicians on site, since all will have a lot more experience than you. At the same time, in a management role, you will be expected to lead, make decisions, and take responsibility for your actions.
This is all fairly generic stuff, did you do any management courses at university, it is often something that engineers neglect during their training. It obviously doesn't help experience wise, but it can give you useful tools.
