Hi everyone I am a mechanical engineering undergrad and I am very interested in electric engineering aswell.
I want to understand what happens and what is needed to transform an optical signal into an electrical. I have of course done some reserach and I know that you could use an SFP in combination with a media converter to transform the optical signal into a signal a PC can use (Ethernet connecton). I know more or less what a VCSEL is and that you can either use MM or a SM fiber (lets say duplex with LC connectors) to transmitt your signal.
¨Now what I do NOT understand and I also cant find too much infos is HOW the signal is transmitted exactly and what steps are needed in detail and why (I know there is a lot of amplification/modulation going on after the photodiode has captured the optical signal)...
And second I dont understand why you need a media converter and what it does. Why cant you just plug an Ethernet cable in the back of an SFP or XFP?
Can someone help me or help me find this information somewhere?
Thanks a lot in advance
