Hi Jack-It shouldn't damage the panel, but it may damage the battery.You didn't say what kind of battery, but as I'm sure you know, rechargeable batteries can be damaged by overcharging, so a charge regulator between the panel and the battery is generally necessary. The exception is some of the low capacity solar panels that are able to trickle charge a battery.-Rick
