Hi, anyone knows if exist a specific formula to calcolate self and mutual inductance of a 3-polar power cable with a fourth conductor used as shield (for example a 3x95mm2+50c cable)? Thanks.

Luca I've never seen a formula for this but the cable manufacturer should be able to help you?

Unfortunatelt the manufacturer didn' t replay to emails. Can i consider the system as a single core? Is a reasonable semplification?

Don't you love manufacturers who don;t give you information about their products?The only thing I can suggest is to get an inductance meter and measure it.You could maybe find a formula to calculate this but it would be a bit hit and miss, there are many factors to take into account.By the way, why do you need this information on your cable?

I did a search for "mutual inductance in cables" and this IEEE paper popped up.
https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/1513049The abstract looks interesting. Unfortunately like most IEEE papers the paper itself is behind a paywall. Perhaps you have access to IEEE papers at work or school...
The abstract was enough to explain why someone would be interested in this on a power cable.

Formula for inductance of single wire in DC regime is just internal impedance (inductance only calculated within the conductor). But as there is a magnetic field around the wire as current flows through it. I guess this external impedance must be taken into account. But..the result is infinity when field in whole space (infinity volume) is considered in integration!!

The magnetic field decreases with larger distance from the wire, so the integral over all space is finite as long as the wire length and diameter are both finite. Neumann's formula from 1846 (you can find the formula in James Clerk Maxwell's book and in later E&M textbooks) permits calculating any mutual inductance using a double line integral over the two coupled circuits, ignoring effects of ferromagnetic materials.
