A digital multimeter, as the name suggests, is used to read "multi"ple parameters, such as current, voltage and resistance, in a circuit. A voltmeter is used to read the voltage in a circuit. These days most of the engineers use multimeters for their varied application and there are really inexpensive options as well. In the older days, when multimeters were too expensive voltmeters were used or these days when measuring voltage is the only requirement then voltmeters are used.
