Everywhere you hear that there are gold-plated terminals such as jack 3.5 mm ...... But what are such gold-plated tips really for? Do they play any role, for example, in sound quality? I would like to extend the cables from the speakers, but I do not know whether to buy cables with ordinary ends (silver) or these gold-plated ones....Write if you know something about this subject.
    Cheers For All

Actually, you have given the topic to quite an argument, although since this is a technical and not a fanatical forum it can be said that these tips have both a better visual effect and better contact and corrosion resistance.

well that's what the forum is.... I certainly do not have an aesthetic appearance in mind...but rather a technical function...does it somehow affect the sound quality or not ?

For the last time I correct a colleague's typos, missing tails, etc.

It affects the impulse response of the amplifier rather than the sound quality itself.

With terminals it's the same as with cables. They don't improve the sound quality, but they can make it worse.

Personally, I see a fundamental difference between these lugs and regular ones - the gold-plated ones are nicer.

I don't hear any, but no difference in sound, though. A well-made connection made of steel/tin or whatever is still a solid job.

Esthetics of gold plated terminals is a secondary matter , gold plating is mainly to increase resistance to aging process , patina , tarnish and possibly corrosion of contacts . At low voltages , contact resistance has a major impact on the quality of the connection . Especially in multi-pin connectors respectable companies use gold plating or silver plating . :D

Here is such a cable but with four compartments. On allegro there are extensions but with three. What is the difference between these ? What is the name of the jack 3.5 mm extension cable with such four bytes ??

In such an extension is still included microphone. That is, ground, left channel, right channel and microphone.

Topic summary

The discussion centers around the impact of gold-plated 3.5mm jacks on speaker cable sound quality. Participants argue that while gold plating enhances visual appeal and provides better corrosion resistance, it does not significantly improve sound quality. Some users note that a well-made connection, regardless of material, is crucial for maintaining sound integrity. The primary function of gold plating is to reduce contact resistance, particularly in low-voltage applications. Additionally, a follow-up question addresses the differences between 3.5mm extension cables with varying configurations, specifically mentioning a four-compartment cable that includes a microphone channel.
